02 · Best Istanbul Taxi Apps 2026
Three taxi apps work in Istanbul: BiTaksi (largest local pool, dominant choice), Uber (foreign card friendly, dispatches yellow taxis), and iTaksi (official İBB municipal app, no surge). All call real licensed yellow taxis on the same UKOME-regulated meter — you're paying for the booking trust layer, not a discount. Works at Istanbul Airport (IST), Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) and anywhere in the city.

The dominant taxi app in Türkiye. English UI, card or cash, accurate ETAs and live driver tracking.
In Istanbul, Uber dispatches a regular yellow taxi (no UberX). Familiar UX and the foreign card you already have on file.
The municipal app run by İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi. No surge pricing, every ride is on a regulated meter.
All app fares are calculated by the same metropolitan taxi meter. The app is essentially a trust layer on top of the regular taxi system: live tracking, plate & driver photo, in-app payment, automatic receipt.
All three apps dispatch the same licensed yellow Istanbul taxi on the UKOME-regulated meter. You pay the same metered fare in every case — the difference is which app's driver pool gets to you first and your preferred payment method.
02 · Pick
Quick decision matrix based on your situation as a foreign traveller in Istanbul.
Use Uber. Your saved card from home works on day one — no Turkish phone number, no SMS verification.
Install BiTaksi. Largest driver pool in Istanbul, accurate ETAs, English UI, supports Apple Pay and Google Pay.
Use iTaksi, the İBB municipal app. By regulation, no surge — strict metropolitan meter only.
Any app works. Specify the terminal in the destination field. Add 30–45 minutes to your ETA for traffic during morning/evening rush.
03 · How it works
Same flow regardless of which app you pick. Knowing what to expect saves anxious moments.
If you're inside the terminal, drop the pin at the airport's official taxi rank — apps will route the driver there. See IST and SAW for the exact spots.
You see the driver's name, photo, plate and ETA. The plate must match what arrives — confirm before getting in. Photograph it before the ride starts for safety.
Driver starts the meter (taksimetre) when you board. Any tolls (Bosphorus bridge, Eurasia Tunnel, O-7 motorway) are added on top — see current toll rates.
App pulls fare automatically from the saved card at trip end. Cash also accepted — say "nakit ödeyeceğim". Tip optional, round up to nearest ₺10.
Star rating affects the driver's standing. If something went wrong (long route, no meter, rudeness), file a complaint in-app — the company will refund and may suspend the driver.
App keeps the driver's contact for ~48 hours after the trip. Use the in-app help to reach them. Most return lost items for a small reward.
04 · Other apps
Beyond taxis — these complement your trip and pair well with the public transport options.
Best public transport routing in Istanbul. Combines metro, bus, tram, ferry into one timing-aware trip. Live arrival data, English UI, free.
Official İETT (Istanbul bus authority) app. Real-time bus locations and arrival countdowns. Essential if you're using Havaist or city buses.
Top up your İstanbulkart from the phone, or pay turnstiles directly with NFC on Android. iPhone users still need the physical card.
Dockless e-scooter rental for short last-mile hops in central Istanbul. Pay-per-minute, foreign cards accepted. Don't take to the airport.
Available but with very limited driver coverage in Istanbul. Mostly used by Russian-speaking visitors. BiTaksi is the better default for everyone else.
