Route · IST → Sultanahmet (Old City)
Landing at Istanbul Airport (IST) with a hotel in Sultanahmet — the historic old city around the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and Topkapı Palace. Distance: ~50 km. Travel time: 45–75 minutes depending on traffic and route. Four ways to make the trip: metered taxi (~₺1,400–1,900), fixed-price WhatsApp transfer, Havaist HVIST-12 direct coach (~₺220–380), or M11 metro + M2 + T1 tram (~₺84 total, ~90 min). Compare all four below.
Updated
01 · Where is Sultanahmet?
The name covers the historic old-city core — bordered by the Bosphorus, the Sea of Marmara and the ancient city walls. Every major sight is walkable from every hotel in the district.
Sultanahmet is a neighbourhood inside Fatih district, on the European side of Istanbul, at the tip of the historic peninsula. All Byzantine and Ottoman landmarks — Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya), Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii), Topkapı Palace, Basilica Cistern, Hippodrome, Grand Bazaar — are within 10–15 minutes' walk of Sultanahmet Square.
The hotel cluster covers about 1 km² — from Cankurtaran and Ahırkapı (near the sea walls) up to Alemdar, Cağaloğlu and Sirkeci. Any taxi driver knows the district by name; give them your hotel address in Google Maps for precision. Streets are narrow — the drop-off is usually at the nearest wide corner, not literally at the door.
02 · Four ways
Compare all four side-by-side. Best option depends on group size, luggage, time of arrival and budget.
Havaist HVIST-12 is the sweet spot — direct, luggage-friendly, one seat. If you're happy to walk 5–10 minutes with a suitcase from the drop-off, save more with M11 + T1 tram.
Fixed-price transfer or metered taxi. Door-to-door means no dragging bags up tram steps or up Sultanahmet's cobbled slopes. Per person cost drops with 2–4 travellers.
Taxi or fixed-price transfer. M11 metro closes around midnight; Havaist runs overnight but with 60–90 min gaps. A pre-booked WhatsApp transfer means someone is waiting when you land.
03 · Taxi route
Two motorway options connect the airport (Arnavutköy, north-west) to Sultanahmet (Fatih peninsula, south-east). Both cross the European side without touching a Bosphorus bridge or ferry.
O-7 motorway → FSM Bridge → D-100 → Sultanahmet. Cuts across the top of the European side, then drops south into the historic peninsula. Off-peak (early morning, late night, weekends) this is 45–55 minutes. Rush hour (07:30–09:30, 17:00–19:30) it slows dramatically.
O-7 → D-100 Sahil Yolu (coastal road) via Küçükçekmece. Longer distance but avoids the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge choke point. Preferred at rush hour and gives sea views of the Marmara. Same fare either way — the meter charges by km, not by chosen route.
Both routes pass through toll gates. The driver pays tolls automatically via HGS (High-Speed Toll) on their windshield, and you reimburse in cash at the end of the trip.
Verify current toll rates at hgs.gov.tr. Some drivers pre-pay tolls; others reimburse as separate cash — either is legal, just confirm the total on the receipt.
04 · Havaist
The official İBB airport coach network runs a dedicated Sultanahmet line. Slower than a taxi but with a fixed ticket price and 24/7 operation.
Istanbul Airport (IST) → Bahçeşehir → Beylikdüzü → Bakırköy → Yenikapı → Sultanahmet. Drops on Alemdar Cd., a short walk from Hagia Sophia and most Sultanahmet hotels.
~70–100 minutes depending on traffic. Fare ~₺220–380, paid onboard by İstanbulkart, contactless bank card or in cash to the driver.
Follow "Havaist" signs from arrivals downstairs to the coach station (lower level). Board at the HVIST-12 platform — check the departure board for the next departure. No pre-booking needed.
Modern 46-seat coaches with Wi-Fi, USB charging at each seat, TV screens and dedicated luggage racks in the belly of the coach. Two large suitcases per person included in the fare.

05 · Metro + tram
Public transport to Sultanahmet costs a fraction of a taxi but involves two transfers and is awkward with heavy luggage.
Board at IST metro station (lower level, follow "Metro" signs). 10 stations, ~30 minutes, ~₺42. Trains every 10–15 minutes, first ~06:00, last ~00:00. Purchase İstanbulkart from the vending machine before boarding.
Transfer at Gayrettepe (green M2 line, southbound). ~15 minutes, ~₺27 with same İstanbulkart. Trains every 3–5 minutes, first 06:00, last 00:00.
Transfer at Yenikapı to the T1 tram (Kabataş direction, eastbound). ~10 minutes, ~₺15. Get off at Sultanahmet stop — you'll be facing the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia.
An alternative is M11 to Halkalı (~40 min, ~₺42), then Marmaray commuter rail to Sirkeci (~20 min, ~₺27), then walk 10 minutes or one T1 tram stop to Sultanahmet. Fewer transfers, useful if you land after midnight when M11 closes at Halkalı end.
Total cost of the M11 + M2 + T1 route: ~₺84 per person with İstanbulkart transfers, versus ~₺1,600 for a taxi. But allow 85–90 minutes end-to-end including the walking between platforms and the wait times.
06 · Hotels
All Sultanahmet hotels are within a compact area — any address works. Below: the most common IST → Sultanahmet drop-off points we handle.
Tevkifhane Sok., between Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cistern. Drop-off at the door — the driver will know exactly.
Ebusuud Cd., Cağaloğlu. Short walk to Hagia Sophia and Sirkeci station.
Taya Hatun Sok., Sirkeci. Popular for its rooftop breakfast with Bosphorus views.
Küçük Ayasofya Cd. Behind the Little Hagia Sophia mosque, quieter side of Sultanahmet.
Yerebatan Cd., steps from Basilica Cistern. Compact modern rooms in the heart of the district.
Küçük Ayasofya Cd. Reliable choice for first-time visitors on a moderate budget.
Adliye Sok., Cankurtaran. Byzantine cistern in the garden — a Sultanahmet original.
Alemdar Cd. Steps from Hagia Sophia and the Havaist HVIST-12 drop-off stop.
Send the Google Maps pin of your hotel via WhatsApp before the trip. Sultanahmet's narrow lanes are covered — driver will get you to the closest safe drop-off.
07 · Watch-outs
Four traps that catch first-time visitors on this specific route.
Never take a ride from anyone approaching you inside IST arrivals. All licensed taxis wait outside at the official rank — follow the "Taxi" signs. Anyone inviting you to their "hotel car" is unlicensed and will overcharge.
Some drivers at the airport rank quote a "fixed price" instead of using the meter. This is illegal — the metered UKOME tariff is mandatory. Politely say "meter please" (taksimetre lütfen) or walk to the next car.
The two motorway routes are close in cost, but a driver taking a deliberately long detour will inflate the fare. Open Google Maps before boarding — "Maps suggests X, please" is a friendly way to keep everyone honest.
The M11 metro from IST closes around midnight. If you land at 01:00, only taxi, fixed-price transfer or overnight Havaist will get you to Sultanahmet — the metro option isn't running.
08 · FAQ
The most-asked questions for travellers making this exact trip.
A licensed metered taxi from Istanbul Airport (IST) to Sultanahmet typically costs ₺1,400–1,900 in 2026, including motorway tolls (~₺50–100). The distance is ~50 km and the journey takes ~45–75 minutes depending on traffic. There is no night surcharge — the same single UKOME tariff applies 24/7.
By taxi: 45 minutes at night or off-peak, 60–75 minutes in rush hour. By Havaist HVIST-12 coach: 70–100 minutes. By M11 metro + T1 tram (with an M2 transfer at Yenikapı): 75–90 minutes end-to-end including transfers and walking.
Yes — Havaist coach line HVIST-12 runs direct from Istanbul Airport (IST) to Sultanahmet. It operates 24/7 with reduced overnight frequency, has luggage racks, Wi-Fi and USB charging. Fare is ~₺220–380 depending on time of day. Board at the Havaist stand on the airport arrivals lower level.
Two main options. Northern route: O-7 motorway → Fatih Sultan Mehmet (FSM) Bridge → D-100 → Sultanahmet. Southern route: O-7 → coastal D-100 (Sahil Yolu) via Küçükçekmece. Northern is faster off-peak, southern avoids the FSM Bridge choke point at rush hour. Both cross the Bosphorus without a ferry. Toll cost is ₺50–100 either way.
Not directly. The M11 metro from IST goes to Gayrettepe (~30 min, ~₺42). To reach Sultanahmet you then transfer at Gayrettepe to the M2 line (southbound to Yenikapı), then take the T1 tram east to Sultanahmet station. Total journey ~75–90 minutes including transfers. Cheaper than a taxi but slower and less convenient with luggage.
Havaist HVIST-12 is cheaper per person (~₺220–380) but drops you at a fixed stop, not your hotel door. A metered taxi (~₺1,400–1,900) is more expensive but door-to-door and shared between up to 4 passengers — for a family or group with luggage, it often works out similar per person and much more convenient.
All Sultanahmet hotels are within a 5-minute drive of one another. Common IST drop-offs include Four Seasons Sultanahmet, Sirkeci Mansion, Sultania Hotel, Amira Hotel, White House Hotel, Hotel Empress Zoe, Best Western Amber, Adamar Hotel, and the smaller boutique hotels around Cankurtaran and Alemdar mahallesi. Any Google Maps address works — the driver knows the district well.
Most licensed Istanbul taxis now accept Visa and Mastercard through an in-car POS terminal, but not all. Always carry Turkish Lira (TL) cash as backup — around ₺2,000 covers fare plus tolls comfortably. Booking via BiTaksi, Uber or WhatsApp fixed-price transfer removes payment friction: card is charged automatically.
Not for a metered taxi — the airport rank always has cars waiting. For a fixed-price WhatsApp transfer, message us 1–24 hours before your flight lands so the driver can meet you at arrivals with your name on a sign. For Havaist, no booking needed — turn up and board.
