A quick sanity check before you ride: open Google Maps, note the driving distance to your hotel, and match it against the nearest row above. If your destination sits between two districts — say, a hotel in Karaköy or Galata — use the Taksim band as the reference; both are the same distance corridor from IST. And if a quoted price is wildly above the matching band before the car has even moved, that's your cue to take the next taxi in the queue.

"Is the Istanbul Airport taxi fixed price?" — the confusion, resolved
Search this question and you'll find websites flatly contradicting each other. Some list neat flat fares per district; others insist everything is metered. Here's what actually happens on the ground.
What you'll read online
Blogs and forum posts list "official fixed prices" from IST — €40 to Taksim, €50 to Sultanahmet and so on. Some of these recycle each other; some describe pre-booked transfer prices as if they were the rank tariff; some are simply out of date. The result is a mess of confident, mutually exclusive claims.
What happens at the rank
The official IST taxi rank runs metered taxis under the İBB UKOME tariff. The dispatcher assigns you a car, the taksimetre starts, and your total is meter plus tolls. No flat fare is posted at the rank, and a rank driver quoting one is stepping outside the rules.
Who quotes flat euros inside the terminal
Touts. Anyone approaching you in the arrivals hall with "taxi? fixed price, fifty euro" is not an official rank driver — official drivers wait in the queue outside, they don't solicit indoors. Walk past, follow the Taxi signs, and read our taxi scams guide before you land.
Where fixed prices genuinely exist
Pre-booked transfers. A private transfer or a driver you arrange in advance can legitimately agree a fixed price with you before pickup — that's a contract, not the rank tariff. This is the only honest form of "fixed price from IST", and it's the model our WhatsApp partner driver works on.

04 · Taxi classes
Yellow, turquoise or black — three price tiers at IST
The IST rank serves more than one class of taxi, and the colour of the car changes what the meter charges. All three are licensed and metered — only the multiplier differs.
Yellow — standard
The classic sarı taksi. Cheapest class, most numerous, and the baseline for every fare range on this page. A normal sedan; perfectly fine for two or three travellers with standard luggage.
Turquoise — comfort
Turkuaz taxis are newer, better-maintained vehicles with a meter set roughly 15–20% above the yellow tariff. Worth it if you value a newer car; not a different service in any structural way.
Black — VIP
Siyah taxis are premium sedans and minivans metered at roughly double the yellow rate. The practical use case: 4+ passengers or a serious luggage pile, where one black minivan beats two yellow sedans.
At the rank, check the car colour before your bags go in the boot — boarding a black taxi "by accident" and discovering the multiplier at your hotel is a classic unforced error. 05 · Tolls & extras
What legitimately gets added to the meter
Two kinds of "extra" exist: tolls, which are real, and surcharges, which mostly aren't. Knowing the difference is the cheapest scam insurance there is.

No night surcharge — since 2017
Istanbul abolished the night tariff (gece tarifesi) in 2017. A single tariff applies 24/7, including at the airport, including on a 3 a.m. arrival. A driver announcing a "night rate" is inventing it — politely refuse and, if needed, take the next car at the rank. Tolls, by contrast, are genuine: there's no gantry receipt because HGS bills the driver's account silently, so a ₺50–100 addition on an airport run is normal. Current toll rates: hgs.gov.tr.
06 · Paying
Cash, card, and the change problem
Paying is where a correct metered fare can still go wrong. Sixty seconds of preparation in the arrivals hall removes almost all of the risk.
Turkish lira cash — the safe default
Every taxi takes TL cash, no exceptions, no terminal that "isn't working". Withdraw lira from an ATM in the arrivals hall before you exit — bank-branded machines, not standalone exchange kiosks. Our airport currency guide covers which counters to skip.
Cards — common, not universal
Many licensed taxis carry in-car POS terminals accepting Visa and Mastercard, and paying by card neatly sidesteps every cash trick. But it is not guaranteed in every car — ask "kart geçiyor mu?" (do you take card?) before setting off if card is your only option.
The banknote swap

Euros and dollars
Some drivers accept foreign cash — at an exchange rate they choose on the spot, never in your favour. Treat it as an emergency fallback only. Paying in lira, at the metered amount, is the whole game.
07 · Cut the risk
Apps can't pick you up at IST — here's what can
In the city, Uber, BiTaksi and iTaksi all dispatch licensed metered taxis and work well. At Istanbul Airport, the pickup side is different.
Why your ride-hailing app goes quiet at arrivals
- Pickup at IST is reserved for airport-licensed taxis. Regular city taxis — the ones Uber and BiTaksi dispatch — can't join the airport queue, so app pickups at the terminal are effectively unavailable.
- The apps work fine in the other direction. City → airport with Uber or BiTaksi is routine: same licensed yellow taxis, same UKOME meter, fare estimate shown up front.
- From IST you have two clean options: walk to the official rank and take a metered taxi, or pre-book a transfer with a fixed, agreed price before you fly.
