How to verify a taxi is legit

  • Plate colour matches one of the three classes (orange/turquoise/black).
  • Meter is on from the start — visible digital display, single tariff.
  • License badge on the dashboard with driver photo, name and ID.
  • Inspection sticker on the rear window, issued by İBB.
  • Photograph the plate number before getting in. Share live location with someone.

Common scams — and how to handle them politely

Stay calm, don't argue, walk away. Drivers who try these tricks rely on you feeling rushed or confused. A short phrase and a confident exit is all you need.

Driver approaching you inside the terminal

Anyone offering a ride before you reach the official rank is unlicensed. They quote a "fixed price" that is 3–5× the metered fare.

What to do: Keep walking, smile, say "Hayır teşekkürler" ("No thanks"). The official rank is signposted just outside.

"My meter is broken"

The classic. The driver wants to negotiate a flat fare so they can charge whatever they like. A licensed taxi cannot legally operate without a working meter.

What to do: Politely say "I'd rather take the next one, thank you" or "Bir sonraki taksiyi tercih ederim, teşekkürler". Open the door, take your bag, step out.

Banknote swap ("you gave me a 5, not a 50")

You hand over a ₺200 note, the driver palms it and shows you a ₺20, claiming you underpaid. Most common at night with tired travellers.

What to do: Before handing any large note, hold it up and say the value out loud ("Bu iki yüz lira"). Photograph it on your phone.

The scenic route

Driver takes you the long way round to inflate the meter. Especially common between IST and the old city.

What to do: Open Google Maps as soon as you sit down. Without accusing, ask "Maps shows a different route — can we go that way?"

"Your hotel is closed / overbooked"

Driver claims your hotel is shut so they can take you to a partner hotel where they collect commission.

What to do: Stay firm: "Please drop me at the address I gave you, I'll call the hotel myself." Phone the hotel on speaker if needed.

What's NOT a scam — legitimate extras

Sometimes the driver will ask for more than the meter shows. The taksimetre does not include road tolls, and the driver pays them upfront with their own HGS account — you reimburse on arrival.

  • Bridge tolls (köprü ücreti) — the three Bosphorus bridges (15 Temmuz, FSM, Yavuz Sultan Selim) are billed separately to the meter.
  • Eurasia Tunnel (Avrasya Tüneli) — the under-Bosphorus road tunnel between Kazlıçeşme and Göztepe.
  • Northern Marmara Motorway (Kuzey Marmara Otoyolu, O-7) — most IST → city routes use it; per-section pricing.
  • Osman Gazi Köprüsü — only relevant for Bursa, Yalova or onward.
  • Airport entry fee at IST — a small fixed amount the airport charges all departing taxis; usually printed on the fare receipt.
  • Late-night surcharge inside an app — BiTaksi may add a small night premium 00:00–06:00. Always shown before you confirm the ride.

HGS bills the driver's account automatically after the crossing — there's no live receipt at the gantry. Knowing the rough fee for the route you're on (see below) is all you need to spot anything off.

Current toll & extra charges

Approximate one-way fees for a standard passenger car (HGS class 1). The Turkish toll authority updates tariffs every January — verify on hgs.gov.tr before your trip.

  • 15 Temmuz Şehitler Köprüsü 1st Bosphorus Bridge — central crossing ~₺45
  • Fatih Sultan Mehmet Köprüsü (FSM) 2nd Bosphorus Bridge — most direct route ~₺45
  • Yavuz Sultan Selim Köprüsü 3rd Bridge, north — IST ↔ Asian side ~₺175
  • Avrasya Tüneli Under-Bosphorus tunnel — fastest old-city ↔ Asian side ~₺140
  • Kuzey Marmara Otoyolu (O-7) Toll motorway — most IST trips, charged per section ~₺40–120
  • Osman Gazi Köprüsü İzmit Bay Bridge — only for Bursa / Yalova trips ~₺750

These are paid on top of the taxi meter. HGS deducts from the driver's account automatically after the trip, so there's no slip to check at the moment — having a rough idea of the rate is enough.

Where to find the current Istanbul taxi tariff

Taxi rates in Istanbul are set by İBB UKOME (Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's transport coordination centre) and revised quarterly. Rather than publishing fixed numbers that quickly go stale, here's where to check the latest official figures:

  • ibb.istanbul — official UKOME decisions, opening fee (açılış), per-km rate (km tarifesi) and minimum fare (asgari ücret).
  • BiTaksi or Uber app — type in your start and end address. The app shows the estimated metered fare before you confirm the ride. Free, accurate, no commitment.
  • hgs.gov.tr — official toll rates for bridges, tunnels and motorways (paid on top of the meter).

Two reliable rules of thumb that don't change with the tariff: (1) there is no night tariff in Istanbul since 2017 — single rate 24/7; (2) the meter is legally required from the start of the trip — refuse fixed-price offers from the airport rank.

FAQ · Taxi fare & rank

Istanbul taxi fare & rank — frequently asked

Quick answers to common questions about Istanbul taxi pricing, ranks and legal rules. Click any item to expand.

What is the opening fee for an Istanbul taxi?

The taksimetre opens with a fixed starting fee (açılış ücreti) set by İBB UKOME. The current rate is published at ibb.istanbul and revised quarterly — verify before travel. The same fee applies day and night.

How much is per kilometre for an Istanbul taxi?

The per-km rate (km tarifesi) is set by İBB UKOME and applies as a single tariff day and night — there is no night surcharge. For the current official rate, check ibb.istanbul or use a metered taxi via the BiTaksi or Uber app where the estimated fare is shown before you confirm the ride.

Is there a night tariff for Istanbul taxis?

No. Istanbul abolished the night tariff in 2017 — a single rate applies 24/7. Reject any driver claiming a "night surcharge" (gece tarifesi) — that is no longer legal in Istanbul.

Is there a minimum fare for an Istanbul taxi?

Yes — a minimum fare floor (asgari ücret) is set by İBB UKOME and revised quarterly. Short trips inside the same district usually hit this minimum. Check the current value on ibb.istanbul before travel.

Where is the nearest official taxi rank in Istanbul?

Official ranks are located at: Istanbul Airport (IST) lower kerb after arrivals, Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) outside the terminal, Taksim Square (two ranks — Istiklal entrance and AKM side), Sultanahmet (by the tram stop), Kadıköy (ferry terminal) and Pendik metro (M4 terminus). Look for the orange-roofed taxi durağı kiosks at major squares.

How do I find an Istanbul taxi rank near me?

Open Google Maps and search "taxi durağı" or "taksi durağı" for nearby ranks. The orange-roofed kiosks at major squares are official ranks. At airports, follow the "Taxi" signs from arrivals. Alternatively, use BiTaksi, Uber or iTaksi apps to call a licensed taxi to your exact location.

Is the Istanbul taxi meter required by law?

Yes — by İBB regulation, every licensed taxi must run the taksimetre from the moment the trip starts. Refuse any flat-rate or "fixed-price" offer from drivers at airports, hotels or tourist sites. The meter is the only legal pricing.

Do Istanbul taxis accept credit cards?

Increasingly yes via in-car POS terminals — but always carry Turkish Lira (TL) cash as a backup, especially for short trips. Ride-hailing apps (BiTaksi, Uber, iTaksi) always accept foreign Visa and Mastercard with automatic in-app payment.
