A private yacht charter from Kabataş, Beşiktaş or Ortaköy starts around €200 for two hours and is the only way to see a Bosphorus sunset. 01 · The Bosphorus
A little geography goes a long way before you step onto a ferry.
The Bosphorus (Boğaziçi) is a natural strait roughly 30 km long and 700 m to 3.5 km wide, running north–south through the middle of Istanbul. It separates the European side (Beşiktaş, Ortaköy, Bebek, Sarıyer) from the Asian side (Üsküdar, Kadıköy, Beykoz, Anadolu Kavağı), and connects the Sea of Marmara in the south to the Black Sea in the north. Every ship travelling between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea passes right through the city — you'll see huge Russian and Ukrainian cargo ships gliding past your ferry.
The city was built on the water. Its palaces, mosques, fortresses and Ottoman wooden mansions (Yalis) all face the strait — because the strait was the highway, the frontier and the view. From the land you see fragments; from the ferry you see the whole city as its builders intended. Two hours on the Bosphorus with a coffee in hand does more for understanding Istanbul than a full day of walking Sultanahmet.

Three products at three price points. The best one for you depends on your time, budget and group size.
The Istanbul city government ferry operator. Runs the classic Long Bosphorus Tour — six hours, full strait, lunch stop at Anadolu Kavağı — for the price of a fancy coffee. Used by locals as much as by tourists. No commentary, no frills, no advance booking. Turn up at Eminönü by 10:00 to catch the daily 10:35.
Private operator running a shorter 90-minute tourist loop from Eminönü — hourly between 10:00 and 17:00. Multilingual live commentary in English, Turkish, German and Arabic. Comfortable seats, snack bar, English-speaking crew. Better if you have limited time or want the sights explained as you pass them.
Chartered boat with captain, from Kabataş, Beşiktaş, Ortaköy or Bebek. Two to four hours, flexible route, snacks and drinks negotiable. The only way to do a proper sunset cruise. Best for families, groups of 4+, honeymoons, anniversaries. Book 24–48 hours ahead in high season.
Şehir Hatları Long Tour goes the full 30 km to the Black Sea entrance. Turyol only goes about halfway — past the second bridge but not to Anadolu Kavağı. Private yachts go wherever you agree with the captain. If you specifically want the two fortresses and the fishing village, only Şehir Hatları delivers.
Şehir Hatları: turn up and buy at the kiosk, no booking. Turyol: turn up or online at turyol.com. Private yacht: always advance, direct with operator or via GetYourGuide / Viator. Never book with a Sultanahmet street tout — the "cruise" they sell is almost never the boat you'd have picked.
Half a day and small budget: Şehir Hatları Long Tour. Two hours and want commentary: Turyol. Special occasion, sunset, or group of 4+: private yacht. Do not book both — one Bosphorus cruise is enough for any trip.
03 · Long Tour
Six hours on the water for ₺100–150 is one of the great travel bargains anywhere in Europe. Here's how it works.
The Uzun Boğaz Turu (Long Bosphorus Tour) departs Eminönü at 10:35 daily — a single sailing per day, so miss it and you miss it. The ferry heads up the strait making short stops at Beşiktaş, Kanlıca and Sarıyer along the way, then reaches Anadolu Kavağı on the Asian shore near the Black Sea entrance around 12:30. The ferry stays there for roughly three hours while you have lunch and explore, then departs mid-afternoon and returns to Eminönü by early evening. Total round-trip time: about six hours.
The Kısa Boğaz Turu (Short Bosphorus Tour) is a separate two-hour Şehir Hatları product running in the afternoon (typically 14:30, varies seasonally). It costs about ₺60–100 and covers only the lower half of the strait — Eminönü to Rumeli Kavağı and back. You see Dolmabahçe, the first bridge and Rumeli Hisarı fortress but miss the second bridge, Anadolu Kavağı and the Black Sea end. Useful if you don't have half a day; not a substitute for the Long Tour.
The ferry moors, everyone piles off, and you have about three hours before the return sailing. Two things to do:
In July and August the restaurants fill fast — the first ferry-load of passengers gets seated, the rest wait 30–45 minutes. Head straight up the hill first, come down to eat at 14:00 when the crowd thins. And do not miss the return ferry — check the exact departure time posted on the pier as soon as you disembark, set an alarm, and be back 20 minutes before. There is no easy alternative way home.
The Şehir Hatları Boğaz Turu kiosk is on the fish-market side of Eminönü square, at the entrance to the dedicated Boğaz Turu pier (separate from the regular commuter ferry piers). Look for the sign "Boğaz Turu" painted above the entrance. Pay cash, card or tap İstanbulkart — the İstanbulkart fare is slightly cheaper than a paper ticket. No advance sale, no online booking — turn up on the day. If someone in the square offers you a ticket outside the kiosk, walk past them; every year tourists lose the fare to touts selling fake or overpriced paper.
04 · Turyol
If you want the highlights in 90 minutes with a live English explanation, this is the pick.
Turyol is a private Turkish ferry operator that runs both commuter services and dedicated tourist Bosphorus cruises. The tourist product from Eminönü is a 90-minute round trip that goes past Dolmabahçe, Ortaköy, the first bridge, the two fortresses, the second bridge, then turns around and comes back. It doesn't reach Anadolu Kavağı — for that you need Şehir Hatları — but it covers the postcard-famous middle section of the strait comfortably within a morning or afternoon.
Three things Şehir Hatları does not offer. Live multilingual commentary in English, Turkish, German and Arabic — a guide explains each landmark as you pass it. More comfortable seating — cushioned outdoor benches and an indoor lounge with a proper snack bar. Hourly departures — every hour on the hour from Eminönü between 10:00 and 17:00 in high season, so no need to plan your day around one 10:35 sailing.
Turyol boats leave from the Turyol pier at Eminönü, roughly 50 metres from the Şehir Hatları Boğaz Turu pier — the piers are adjacent, both signposted. You can turn up on the day and buy from the kiosk, or book online at turyol.com the night before. Advance booking is only useful in the July–August peak; the rest of the year seats are always available on the next departure. Turyol also runs a competing "Full Bosphorus" longer product on some days, at ₺500–700 — check the schedule at the kiosk if you have four hours and want commentary.
05 · Private yacht
The premium tier. Justified for certain trips, wasted on others.
A dozen small operators run charter fleets from the piers on the European shore between Kabataş and Bebek. The typical boat is a 12–20 metre motor yacht with a captain and one deckhand, seating six to twelve guests. Duration is 2, 3 or 4 hours. You choose the route with the captain, which usually means: north from Kabataş, past Dolmabahçe and Ortaköy, up to the second bridge, round Rumeli Hisarı, back down the Asian side and home. Snacks, wine and cheese boards are often included in the higher tier or bookable as add-ons.
The full range is €200 to €2,000+ — the low end is a small basic boat for two hours off-season, the top end is a superyacht with catering for a wedding party. The realistic middle for a couple or family of four is €300–500 for a two-hour cruise, which splits to €75–125 per head — expensive for a solo traveller, competitive with a nice restaurant dinner for a group of four. Sunset timing (departing 60–90 minutes before sunset) is the single most-booked slot; expect a 30–50% premium in summer for that window.
Şehir Hatları does not run a sunset service. The ferries stop tour operation in the late afternoon. Turyol sometimes advertises evening runs in July–August but the schedule is not reliable. If you specifically want to be on the Bosphorus at golden hour, book a private boat.
Kabataş is the easiest pier to reach — F1 funicular from Taksim, T1 tram from Sultanahmet or Sirkeci. Ortaköy is prettier but requires a bus 22 from Kabataş or a taxi. Bebek is quieter but a longer taxi ride from central hotels.
06 · Getting to the pier
The cruise is only as easy as the last mile to the pier. Here are the practical options.
Eminönü sits on the historic peninsula, between the Galata Bridge and Sirkeci railway station. From Sultanahmet: 10-minute walk downhill or one stop on the T1 tram to Eminönü. From Taksim: F1 funicular to Kabataş, then T1 tram three stops to Eminönü (~25 min, ₺20). From Kadıköy (Asian side): direct Şehir Hatları commuter ferry across to Eminönü, roughly 20 minutes, ₺20 with İstanbulkart — a scenic bonus in itself.
Kabataş: T1 tram (from Sultanahmet or Eminönü) or F1 funicular (from Taksim). This is the easiest yacht pier to reach. Ortaköy: bus 22 from Kabataş, or a taxi from any central hotel for ₺100–250. Prettier square, harder access. Bebek: bus 25E from Kabataş, or taxi ₺200–400 from central hotels. Furthest north, quietest, longest journey — factor 30–45 minutes travel time from a Sultanahmet hotel.

07 · Watch-outs
Cheap to avoid if you know them in advance, expensive or disappointing if you don't.
The generic dinner-cruise packages sold by Sultanahmet touts and by many aggregator sites are almost always a low-quality buffet on a slow boat with pre-recorded music and a whirling-dervish show that has no cultural authenticity. If you want dinner on the water, either eat at Anadolu Kavağı after the Long Tour or charter a small private boat and bring your own catering from Beşiktaş.
There is only one departure per day. Miss the 10:35 and the next full Uzun Boğaz Turu is tomorrow. Add 45 minutes to whatever you think it takes to reach Eminönü from your hotel and set an alarm. Arrival by 10:00 at the pier is the safe target.
In July and August, the first restaurants fill within 15 minutes of the ferry docking and the rest of the ferry-load waits 30–45 minutes for a table. Walk past the pier-front row (touristy and overpriced), go one street back, or head up to Yoros Castle first and eat at 14:00 when the queue clears.
Anyone offering you a Boğaz Turu ticket outside the official Şehir Hatları or Turyol kiosk is a tout. The tickets are either fake, overpriced, or for a different (worse) boat. Always buy at the kiosk itself — the queue moves fast.
The Kısa Boğaz Turu (Short Tour) only goes as far as Rumeli Kavağı — roughly halfway. You'll miss the second bridge, the Yalis further north, Anadolu Hisarı fortress and the Anadolu Kavağı village. It's a fine two-hour taster; it is not a replacement for the Long Tour.
The Bosphorus is measurably windier and cooler than the city, especially on the upper deck and especially in the afternoon when the northerly wind picks up. Bring a light jacket even in July, a proper coat and hat outside high summer, and gloves in winter. Every year tourists shiver through six hours in a T-shirt because central Istanbul was 28°C.
