Buying your İstanbulkart at the airport

At IST: beside the M11 metro station beneath the terminal. At SAW: by the M4 station entrance. Look for the yellow machines with the İstanbulkart logo.

What is an İstanbulkart and do I need one?
İstanbulkart is Istanbul's rechargeable transport card — one card for metro, tram, bus, ferry, Marmaray and the airport coaches (Havaist and HAVABUS). You don't strictly need one: gates also accept contactless Visa/Mastercard and Apple/Google Pay. But İstanbulkart fares are lower per ride and it unlocks transfer discounts, so it pays for itself if you'll ride public transport more than a few times.
Where do I buy an İstanbulkart at the airport?
At the yellow 'Biletmatik' machines — at IST they're by the M11 metro station beneath the terminal; at SAW near the M4 station entrance. Machines have an English menu and accept cash and cards. Buy the card, load credit, done — no registration required for the standard anonymous card.
How much does an İstanbulkart cost in 2026?
The card itself has a one-time issue fee of roughly ₺130 (shown on the machine screen — verify there, it changes periodically). Then you load credit on top. A standard city ride is about ₺27–35; the airport M11 metro has a premium fare of ₺42 (March 2026).
Can I just use my bank card instead of İstanbulkart?
Yes. All metro, tram, Marmaray gates and most buses accept contactless Visa/Mastercard and phone wallets (Apple Pay / Google Pay) directly at the reader. The trade-off: the contactless rate is higher than the İstanbulkart rate and you don't get transfer discounts. For 1–3 rides, bank card is fine; beyond that, İstanbulkart wins.
How do transfer discounts work?
Tap into a second (or third) mode within about two hours of your first tap and each connecting ride is progressively discounted automatically. Metro → tram → ferry chains become significantly cheaper than paying three full fares. Discounts only apply with İstanbulkart — not with contactless bank cards.
Can several people share one İstanbulkart?
Yes for regular buses, trams and most metro lines — tap once per person and pass the card back. Note: some airport-line gates and the Havaist/HAVABUS readers expect one card per passenger, and transfer discounts apply to the card, not each rider. For families riding a lot, one card per adult is the comfortable setup.
How do I top up my İstanbulkart?
At any Biletmatik machine (cash or card, English menu), at kiosks and small shops showing the İstanbulkart logo, or with the official İstanbulkart app (NFC phones can load credit directly). Machines exist at every metro and Marmaray station, both airports, and major tram stops.
Does İstanbulkart work for Havaist and HAVABUS airport coaches?
Yes — both accept İstanbulkart, alongside contactless bank cards and cash. On coaches you pay when boarding. It's the same card for everything: that's the point.
