02 · M11 Metro
The M11 is the dedicated Istanbul Airport metro line, opened in stages between 2023 and 2024. It connects IST directly to Gayrettepe on the European side, where you can transfer to the M2 for Taksim.
Trains run in both directions every 8–10 minutes. Total end-to-end journey: ~33 minutes.
From Gayrettepe, the M2 line takes you to Taksim in two more stops (~6 min). Total Istanbul Airport → Taksim by metro: ~40 min.

03 · Havaist
Havaist (HAVAİST) is the official IST airport coach network, run under İBB. Modern 46-seat coaches with Wi-Fi, USB charging, TV screens and dedicated luggage racks. The only 24/7 public option from Istanbul Airport.
Direct from IST to Taksim Square via Mecidiyeköy. The default choice for travellers heading to Beyoğlu, Istiklal, Galata or the European-side hotels around Taksim.
For travellers staying near Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar or the historic peninsula. Drops you near the tram stop in the heart of old Istanbul.
The cross-Bosphorus coach. Crosses to the Asian side via the Eurasia Tunnel. Useful if you're staying in Kadıköy, Moda or wider Asian-side districts without a flight to SAW.
Alternative routing to the old city via different motorway segments. Sometimes faster in rush hour. Same drop-off zone as HVIST-12.
Havaist runs to 50+ city hubs in total, including Bakırköy, Bostancı, Beşiktaş, Şişli, Yenibosna and Ataşehir. Full network map and timetable at hava.ist.
Every Havaist coach has Wi-Fi, USB charging at every seat, overhead TV screens, dedicated luggage compartments. Tickets via İstanbulkart, contactless card or driver.
Follow the "Havaist" signs from arrivals down to the bus station at the lower level. Look up your destination on the departure board, note the line number (HVIST-1, HVIST-12, etc.), then board at the platform marked for that line. Pay onboard with İstanbulkart, contactless card or cash to the driver.
04 · İETT Bus
İETT (İstanbul Elektrik Tramvay ve Tünel İşletmeleri) is the municipal bus network. From IST there are two main lines — slow, limited luggage space, but unbeatable on cost (~₺27 per ride).
Direct municipal bus from IST to Mecidiyeköy, a major transfer hub with M2 metro and Marmaray connections. Slow but cheap option to access the European side without a Havaist or taxi.
From IST to Mahmutbey on the city's western edge. Mahmutbey is the M3 metro terminus — useful if your hotel is in the Yenibosna, Bağcılar or Kirazlı corridor.
05 · How to
The most common journey for first-time visitors. ~40 minutes total, ~₺50 with one transfer.
Buy an İstanbulkart from the vending machines at IST arrivals (~₺130 for the card, then top up any amount). Or skip the card — most M11 turnstiles accept Visa/Mastercard contactless and Apple Pay / Google Pay directly.
From the IST arrivals hall, follow signs marked "Metro" down to the lower level. The M11 line entrance is well-signposted in English and Turkish. Walking distance: ~5 minutes through the terminal.
Board the M11 metro towards Gayrettepe. The journey takes about 30 minutes with trains running every 8–10 minutes between 06:00 and 00:00. Sit by the dedicated luggage area at either end of the train.
At Gayrettepe, follow signs to the M2 line (green). Two stops on M2 brings you to Taksim. Total IST → Taksim journey: ~40 minutes for ~₺50. From Taksim it's a short walk to most central European-side hotels.
