06 · FAQ

Istanbul Airport public transport — frequently asked

Quick answers to common public transport questions for IST.

How do I get from Istanbul Airport to the city by public transport?

Three main options: M11 metro (cheapest reasonable choice at ~₺42, fastest at ~30 min to Gayrettepe then M2 transfer to Taksim), Havaist coach (24/7 direct to Taksim, Sultanahmet, Kadıköy and 50+ districts, ~₺170–420), or İETT city bus H-2/H-3 (cheapest at ~₺27 but slower and limited luggage space).

What time does the M11 Istanbul Airport metro start?

The M11 metro from Istanbul Airport runs from approximately 06:00 to 00:00 daily. The last train from Gayrettepe back to Istanbul Airport departs around 00:40.

Is Istanbul Airport public transport available 24/7?

Havaist coaches run 24 hours a day with reduced frequency overnight. The M11 metro does NOT run overnight (closes around midnight). For flights landing between 00:00 and 06:00, your options are Havaist coach or an official taxi from the rank outside arrivals.

How much does the Istanbul Airport metro cost in 2026?

The M11 metro fare from Istanbul Airport is around ₺42 as of March 2026, paid with İstanbulkart or any contactless bank card. Rates are reviewed periodically — verify the current rate on metro.istanbul before travel.

Can I use a contactless card at Istanbul Airport metro?

Yes. Most M11 turnstiles accept Visa and Mastercard contactless directly — no need to buy an İstanbulkart for a single trip. Tap your card or phone (Apple Pay / Google Pay) at the gate.

What is the difference between Havaist and the metro from Istanbul Airport?

Havaist is a coach service (24/7, direct to ~50 city districts, ₺170–420 depending on destination, with luggage racks, Wi-Fi, USB charging). The M11 metro is cheaper (~₺42) and often faster door-to-door for central destinations but requires a transfer at Gayrettepe and stops running overnight.

Is public transport from Istanbul Airport faster than a taxi?

For central destinations (Taksim, Şişhane, Vezneciler) during weekday traffic, the M11 metro is often faster than a taxi because it bypasses motorway congestion. For luggage-heavy travel, late-night arrivals or non-metro destinations, taxi or Havaist may be more practical.

Are there night buses from Istanbul Airport?

Yes — Havaist runs 24/7 with reduced overnight frequency on most lines (HVIST-1 to Taksim, HVIST-12 to Sultanahmet, HVIST-14 to Kadıköy). İETT also runs select night buses. The M11 metro does NOT run overnight.
