01 · Why it's easier than you think

Late-night arrivals in Istanbul are actually straightforward

The mental image of a deserted terminal at 3am does not match reality. Istanbul's two airports are among the busiest in Europe and are built around overnight operations.

Continuous operations

Istanbul Airport (IST) handles landings and departures throughout the night — long-haul flights from Asia and the Americas routinely arrive between 02:00 and 05:00. Passport control lanes, baggage belts and the arrivals hall are all fully manned. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side is quieter overnight but still active, serving Pegasus and AJet flights arriving from the Gulf, Central Asia and Europe.

Everything you need is open

The taxi rank has a coordinator on shift all night. Havaist and HAVABUS coach stands run their reduced overnight timetable. ATMs and currency exchange counters stay open. There is 24-hour food and drink in the airside area at IST, and at least one landside café in each terminal. Airport police walk the arrivals hall throughout the night — a visible, calming presence.

What tends to go wrong is the traveller side, not the airport side

Nearly every "late-night arrival disaster" story shares one of two roots: no working phone data on landing, or a hotel that did not know the guest was coming after 23:00. Both are fixable before you fly.

03 · Four options at 3am

Four ways to leave the airport overnight

Cost, speed and hassle vary a lot. For most late-night arrivals the choice comes down to the top two.

Option 1 — Official yellow taxi

Walk out of arrivals to the official taxi rank. A coordinator directs you to the next car in line. Meter starts at zero, motorway tolls added at the end. Rate is the standard single 24/7 UKOME tariff — anyone claiming a night surcharge is wrong. Fare to Sultanahmet ~₺1,400–1,900, to Taksim ~₺1,300–1,700, to Kadıköy ~₺1,600–2,100 (includes bridge or tunnel toll).

Option 2 — Fixed-price WhatsApp transfer

Pre-book by WhatsApp a few hours or days before your flight. Driver tracks the flight number, adjusts pickup automatically for delays, meets you at the arrivals gate holding your name on a sign, helps with luggage. One price agreed in writing — no meter, no toll surprise, no post-flight negotiation. Best option for families, solo female travellers, first-time visitors and anyone tired after a long-haul leg.

Option 3 — Havaist coach (IST only)

From IST, the Havaist coach network continues 24/7 with roughly hourly overnight departures. Board on the arrivals lower level — check the departure board for the next HVIST-1 (Taksim), HVIST-12 (Sultanahmet) or HVIST-14 (Kadıköy). Fare ~₺220–380, paid onboard by contactless card or İstanbulkart. Slower than a taxi (70–110 min door-to-stop) but a fraction of the cost.

Option 4 — HAVABUS coach (SAW only)

From Sabiha Gökçen, HAVABUS runs Taksim and Kadıköy overnight. Frequency drops to roughly one coach per hour. Fare ~₺260–360. The last-mile from Taksim or Kadıköy to your hotel then usually needs a short taxi (~₺150–350) since local tram and bus networks are also thinner between midnight and 06:00.

Which option should you pick?

Solo, backpack, budget

Havaist HVIST-1 (Taksim) or HVIST-12 (Sultanahmet) from IST — cheapest overnight option that puts you in the city. From SAW, HAVABUS to Taksim then a short taxi.

Family or heavy luggage

Fixed-price WhatsApp transfer. Door-to-door, name sign, one predictable price. Kids can sleep in the car; nobody drags a suitcase across a coach concourse at 3am.

Solo female traveller

Fixed-price WhatsApp transfer or official rank. The pre-booked driver known by the site avoids any negotiation moment and puts a named contact between you and the terminal.

04 · Safety overnight

Safety at IST and SAW between midnight and dawn

Both airports rank comfortably among the safest overnight terminals in Europe. The rules are simple and identical to the daytime ones.

Visible airport policing

Uniformed airport police (Havalimanı Polisi) patrol the arrivals hall continuously. At IST there is a dedicated police desk near the passport control exit. Coordinators in high-visibility jackets stand at the taxi rank. If anything feels wrong, walk to the nearest uniform — they speak enough English to help or radio a colleague who does.

The one rule that matters

Never accept a ride from anyone approaching you inside the terminal. Legitimate taxis wait outside at the official rank; legitimate pre-booked drivers wait at the arrivals gate holding a name sign. Anyone inside the hall offering "cheap taxi", "hotel car" or "airport transfer" is unlicensed. Politely decline and keep walking to the official rank or your booked driver.

Women travelling alone

Overnight arrivals for solo female travellers are well-supported. The taxi coordinator, the pre-booked driver system, and the airport police mean you are never dealing with strangers in an unstructured setting. If you prefer a female driver, mention it when you WhatsApp for a booking — availability is not guaranteed but our partners will try.

Verifying your driver

For a pre-booked transfer, confirm the driver's vehicle plate and first name by WhatsApp before you leave arrivals. Both match what appears on the name sign. If a driver approaches you without matching those details, do not follow them — call the number you booked with and confirm.

05 · Practical prep

Prep before you fly — 15 minutes at home saves an hour on landing

The difference between a smooth 3am arrival and a stressful one is almost always about preparation at the departure end.

  1. 1
Confirm 24-hour reception with your hotel

Email or WhatsApp your hotel at least 24 hours before departure. Give them your flight number and expected arrival time at the hotel (add ~60 minutes to landing time from IST, ~45 from SAW). Chain hotels — Hilton, Marriott, Ceylan Intercontinental, Radisson, Divan — are always 24/7. Smaller Sultanahmet, Beyoğlu or Beşiktaş boutiques may only staff reception until 23:00. Ask for the night-check-in procedure in writing.

  2. 2
    Buy an eSIM before boarding

Airalo, Holafly, Nomad and similar providers sell Turkey or global eSIMs that activate the moment your phone finds a Turkish carrier. This gives you mobile data on landing — you can then open Uber, WhatsApp your driver, message the hotel or use Google Maps. The airport SIM shops are closed overnight; airport free Wi-Fi is fine inside the terminal but does not follow you into the taxi.

  3. 3
Change small TL cash at arrivals

Withdraw or exchange ₺2,000–3,000 at an airport ATM or bureau. This covers a metered taxi, motorway tolls (paid in cash on top of the meter), any pre-arranged transfer that is cash-only, plus a tip. Rates at the airport are worse than in the city — change only what you need for the first day, then use a bank branch ATM for the rest.

  4. 4
Print your hotel address in Turkish

Screenshot the hotel's Google Maps page in Turkish (map card includes the street name and district). Save the pin to your phone in offline mode too. A driver who does not read Latin script can still parse a familiar Turkish address, and the offline map removes the risk of a data outage on the journey.

Optional but worth it

  • Snack in your bag. If you land at 4am and check in at 5am, the hotel breakfast may not open until 07:00 or later.
  • Charger cable in your carry-on. Long-haul phones land at 5%. Every seat in Istanbul Airport has USB power in the arrivals lounge if you need to top up before ordering a ride.
  • Water bottle empty through security. Fill at fountains after passport control at IST — hydration matters more than it feels at 3am.

06 · By destination district

Late-night routes to Sultanahmet, Taksim and Kadıköy

Short guide by neighbourhood — the practical option changes depending on which airport you land at and which side of the city you are heading to.

Sultanahmet (Old City)

European side

From IST: taxi (~₺1,400–1,900, ~50 min at that hour) or HVIST-12 coach (~₺220–380, ~90 min). From SAW: taxi (~₺1,800–2,300 incl. bridge toll) or HAVABUS Taksim + T1 tram (tram not overnight — expect a short taxi from Taksim). Many boutique hotels close reception at 23:00 — confirm late check-in.

Taksim & Beyoğlu

European side

From IST: taxi (~₺1,300–1,700, ~40–50 min) or HVIST-1 coach (~₺220–360, ~75 min). From SAW: taxi (~₺1,600–2,200, ~50 min) or HAVABUS Taksim (~₺260–360). Taksim is the strongest overnight coach hub for both airports.

Kadıköy & Asian side

Asian side

From IST: taxi (~₺1,700–2,200, ~55–70 min incl. bridge or tunnel toll) or HVIST-14 coach (~₺260–380). From SAW: taxi (~₺600–900, ~25–35 min) — this is the shortest overnight run, SAW to Kadıköy is a natural pair.

Beşiktaş & Şişli

European side

From IST: taxi (~₺1,300–1,700). Havaist HVIST-2 covers Beşiktaş but with wider overnight gaps — a taxi is often faster overnight. From SAW: taxi (~₺1,700–2,200 incl. bridge). Business hotels here (Ritz-Carlton, Conrad, Hyatt) are all 24/7 reception.

Fatih (outside Sultanahmet)

European side

From IST: taxi (~₺1,300–1,700, ~45 min) is the practical overnight option. The area is walkable in daylight but at 3am with luggage a taxi drop-off at the hotel door is worth the fare.

Outer districts

Anywhere else

Fixed-price WhatsApp transfer covers every Istanbul district — Bakırköy, Ataköy, Zeytinburnu, Maltepe, Ataşehir, Sarıyer, and beyond. Send your Google Maps pin when you book. Overnight route planning and traffic-free timing are actually easier than daytime for these outer neighbourhoods.

07 · Common mistakes

Four late-night arrival traps to avoid

The same four errors account for nearly every avoidable overnight-arrival problem in Istanbul.

Assuming the M11 will be running "when I land"

The M11 metro from IST closes around midnight and reopens around 06:00. If your flight lands at 01:30, the metro option simply does not exist. The same applies to M4 from SAW. Plan taxi, Havaist or HAVABUS instead — do not walk down to the metro station and then have to walk back up with your luggage.

Booking a non-24h hotel without warning them

Small Sultanahmet and Beyoğlu boutiques often close reception at 23:00. Turning up at 03:30 to a locked front door is a real problem. A short email or WhatsApp to the hotel a day before departure — with flight number and estimated hotel arrival time — always fixes this. Chains never have this problem.

Accepting the first "taxi" offer inside the terminal

Anyone offering you a ride inside the arrivals hall is unlicensed. Prices are wildly inflated, sometimes 4–5× the metered rate. Walk past politely and continue outside to the official yellow taxi rank, or to your pre-booked driver holding a name sign at the arrivals gate.

Not arranging phone data in advance

SIM card counters are closed overnight. If you land without an eSIM or working roaming, you cannot call an Uber, message your driver or open Google Maps once you leave the airport Wi-Fi. A pre-installed eSIM (activated in-flight) removes this failure mode entirely — it costs a few dollars and works from the moment you land.

08 · FAQ

Late-night arrival — frequently asked

The most-asked questions from travellers landing between midnight and 06:00 at IST or SAW.

Does the M11 metro run at night?

No. The M11 metro from Istanbul Airport (IST) to Gayrettepe operates roughly 06:00 to 00:00. The last train leaves around midnight and the first train the next morning is around 06:00. If your flight lands between about 00:30 and 05:30, the metro is closed — plan for taxi, fixed-price transfer or overnight Havaist coach instead.

Is there a night surcharge on Istanbul taxi?

No. Istanbul abolished the separate night tariff (gece tarifesi) in 2017. A single UKOME-regulated tariff applies 24 hours a day — the meter charges the same rate at 3am as at 3pm. Any driver claiming a night surcharge is overcharging. Motorway tolls are added on top of the meter regardless of the hour.

Is IST arrivals safe at 3am?

Yes. Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) are staffed 24/7 by airport police, passport control and taxi coordinators. The taxi rank has a visible supervisor throughout the night. Follow the same rule as by day — ignore anyone approaching you inside the terminal offering a ride, and use only the official rank outside or a pre-booked driver holding a name sign.

How do I confirm my hotel accepts late check-in?

Email or WhatsApp the hotel at least 24 hours before your flight, giving them your flight number and expected arrival time at the hotel (typically 60–90 minutes after landing). Larger chains — Hilton, Marriott, Ceylan Intercontinental, Radisson — always have 24-hour reception. Smaller Sultanahmet boutiques may only staff until 23:00, so a late-check-in note is essential; some leave a key with a night porter or nearby staff member.

Do currency exchange counters open overnight at IST?

Yes. Several currency exchange counters and ATMs in the arrivals hall at Istanbul Airport (IST) operate 24 hours, as do those in the landside area of Sabiha Gökçen (SAW). Rates are worse than in the city — change only enough Turkish Lira for the taxi, tolls and any tips (₺2,000–3,000 is typically plenty), then use a bank ATM in the city for the rest.

Can I use Uber at 2am from IST?

Yes. Uber, BiTaksi and iTaksi all operate through the night at IST and SAW, dispatching licensed yellow or turquoise taxis. Expect driver wait times of 5–15 minutes overnight (versus around 2 minutes in the daytime) because fewer drivers are on shift. You need mobile data to summon a ride — arrange an eSIM before you fly, or use airport free Wi-Fi to book before you leave the terminal.

What's the cheapest overnight option from SAW to Taksim?

The HAVABUS coach from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) to Taksim runs 24/7 with reduced overnight frequency (roughly every 60 minutes instead of 30). Fare is around ₺260–360, paid in cash or by contactless card. It is by far the cheapest option overnight — the M4 metro is closed between about 00:00 and 06:00, and a taxi from SAW to Taksim runs ₺1,600–2,200 including the Bosphorus bridge toll.

What if my flight is delayed to 4am?

A pre-booked WhatsApp driver tracks your flight number and adjusts pickup automatically — no extra cost for reasonable delays. The airport taxi rank operates all night, so if you land without a booking there will still be a queue of yellow cabs. Message your hotel with the revised arrival time as soon as you can. Havaist and HAVABUS overnight departures continue every 60–90 minutes right through until dawn.

Should I pre-book a taxi for a late arrival?

For a first visit, a delayed connection, a solo traveller, a family with tired children or anyone without a working Turkish SIM — yes. A pre-booked fixed-price transfer means one person meets you at the arrivals gate with a name sign, helps with luggage and drives you to the hotel door for a price agreed in writing. The official airport rank is a fine fallback, but the pre-booking removes every friction point at the moment when you are least willing to negotiate.
