01 · The law

What Turkish traffic law requires for children in cars

The rule is simple, universal and enforced — it does not distinguish between residents, tourists, private cars, taxis or pre-booked transfers.

Under 150 cm or under 12 years

Turkish traffic regulations require an appropriate child safety restraint for every passenger whose height is below 150 cm or whose age is under 12 years. Either threshold triggers the requirement — a tall 10-year-old measuring 152 cm can legally use an adult seat belt; a shorter 12-year-old still needs a booster. The seat must match the child's weight and height band, be correctly installed, and be used on every journey no matter how short.

Rear-facing infants on the rear seat

Infants must travel in a rear-facing carrier and, in a standard car, must be seated on the rear seat. Front-seat carriage of an infant is only permitted if the passenger airbag has been deactivated and the seat has been physically slid back — a step private hire drivers are not equipped to perform on the way to arrivals. For airport transfers, always plan for the rear-facing seat to go on the rear bench.

The driver carries responsibility

Under Turkish traffic law the driver is legally responsible for the correct restraint of every child under the age threshold in the vehicle. Fines for non-compliance apply to the driver, not the passenger, which is precisely why airport-rank taxi drivers — who have no seat and cannot install one on the spot — will often decline a family fare rather than risk the penalty.

Same rule at IST and SAW

The regulation is national. It applies identically at Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side and at Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side, and on every road between them. It also applies inside the airport transit zone once you have cleared customs and stepped into a vehicle — there is no "short journey" exemption.

02 · The seats

The three child seat types your family may need

Seats are grouped by weight and height rather than age. Tell us the weight and height of each child and we install the correct combination before pick-up.

Infant carrier

0–12 months

Up to ~13 kg, rear-facing. The classic bucket-style carrier with a carry handle. Clicks into an ISOFIX base or belts in directly on the rear seat. Best for newborns and babies who cannot yet sit unsupported. Airline-approved models fold onto some strollers, useful for the walk through arrivals.

Toddler seat

1–4 years

Around 9–18 kg, forward-facing with a five-point harness. The upright toddler seat used for children who have outgrown the infant carrier but are still too small for a booster. Reclines slightly for sleeping on the ride into the city — useful after a long-haul flight.

Booster

4–12 years

Around 15–36 kg, uses the vehicle's own three-point seat belt routed correctly across the child's shoulder and hips. Available as high-back models (with side-impact wings and a sleep-friendly headrest) or as backless boosters for older children close to the 150 cm threshold.

Two children in different bands? No problem

A common family combination is a baby plus a toddler, or a toddler plus a school-age child. Request one of each — an infant carrier plus a booster, for example — and we install both in the same vehicle. In a Vito or Caravelle 7-seater there is room for three child seats side by side on the middle bench, with two adults on the front row.

If you are travelling with your own preferred seat from home, that is also fine — mention it in the WhatsApp message so we allocate a vehicle with the correct ISOFIX or belt configuration and enough time at pick-up to install it.

03 · The rank problem

Why the airport taxi rank does not solve this

The official yellow-taxi ranks at IST and SAW are efficient and licensed — but they are not equipped for families with small children.

No seats on board

Airport-rank taxis are mostly compact sedans configured for solo business travellers and couples. They do not carry infant carriers, toddler seats or boosters as standard, and there is no on-site rental desk that lends one to arriving passengers. A driver may agree to take a family without a seat — but that leaves the family choosing between an illegal ride and standing at the rank with tired kids.

Long-haul plus car seat shopping does not mix

The alternative — leaving the airport in a taxi without a seat, then buying one in Istanbul the following day — is both illegal for the journey and impractical. After a long flight, the family needs to be in the hotel within an hour, not detouring to a Bakırköy baby-goods shop. Pre-booking flips the equation entirely: the seat is already fitted when you land.

Language friction at the rank

Explaining seat requirements at the rank in Turkish, in the middle of the queue, with a crying infant, is a difficult first minute in a new country. A WhatsApp booking sorts every detail in English the day before — vehicle size, seat types, hotel drop-off, price — leaving nothing to negotiate on arrival.

Vehicle-size mismatch

Even if the first taxi in the rank did carry a seat, it would rarely be large enough for a family of five with pram and suitcases. Ranks operate on a first-in, first-out basis — you cannot request a larger vehicle. Booking ahead is the only way to guarantee that the vehicle actually fits your family and your bags.

04 · The vehicle

Choosing the right vehicle for your family and luggage

The vehicle decision comes down to number of passengers, number of child seats and total luggage — including any pram, travel cot or car seat brought from home.

Standard sedan

2 adults + 1 seat

Toyota Corolla, Škoda Superb or similar. Fits 2 adults, 1 child in a seat, up to 2 large suitcases + 1 folded pram. Best for a couple with a single infant or toddler and moderate luggage. Cheapest option in the family range.

Mercedes Vito / VW Caravelle

7-seater

The workhorse of Istanbul family transfers. Fits 2 adults + 3 kids in dedicated seats (up to three child seats side by side on the middle bench) plus 4–5 large suitcases and a folded pram in the boot. High roof, sliding side door — easy loading with a baby in a carrier.

8-seater van

Extended family

Mercedes Sprinter or VW Crafter. Fits up to 8 passengers with a large boot — the right choice for multi-generational trips (grandparents plus parents plus kids) or two families travelling together. Room for multiple prams and 6+ suitcases.

Luggage capacity — the honest guide

"Fits four suitcases" often depends on suitcase size and how firmly you pack. These are the working numbers our drivers use when allocating vehicles:

  • Sedan: 2 large suitcases (75 cm) + 2 cabin bags + 1 folded pram — tight but works
  • Vito / Caravelle: 4–5 large suitcases + 3 cabin bags + 1 folded pram — comfortable
  • 8-seater van: 6+ large suitcases + hand luggage for all + 2 prams — plenty of room

If you are unsure, describe the luggage by count and rough size (cabin / medium / large) in your WhatsApp message. We would rather send a Vito for a mid-size sedan booking than have a family arrive to a boot that will not close.

05 · Arrivals

Meet & greet, luggage help and the pram

The point of a pre-booked family transfer is that the first minute out of customs is calm — driver ready, seats installed, boot open.

The meet-point at IST

At Istanbul Airport the standard meet-point is the arrivals gate on the ground floor, immediately after the customs channel. Your driver stands at the barrier holding a sign printed with your family name. If you prefer the airport's official meet-and-greet lounge or a specific café inside the terminal, we agree the location in the WhatsApp thread the night before your flight.

The meet-point at SAW

At Sabiha Gökçen the international arrivals hall is smaller — meet-point is the exit gate directly after baggage reclaim, at the far right as you leave. Domestic arrivals use a separate exit two doors down; specify which one applies to your flight in the WhatsApp booking so the driver waits at the correct door.

Luggage help

The driver walks with you to the vehicle in the covered pick-up lane and loads all luggage into the boot. Prams and travel cots are handled the same way — folded flat and stored in the rear. Parents can concentrate on the children and hand luggage; nobody has to drag a suitcase across the car park with a toddler on one arm.

Prams and travel cots

Bringing a stroller or pram is expected and factored into the vehicle allocation. Full-size prams fold flat into a sedan boot; buggies (umbrella-fold) are trivial. Travel cots take more space — flag them in the WhatsApp message so we send a Vito rather than a sedan. Booster seats brought from home follow the same rule — send a photo if unsure and we confirm it will fit.

06 · Alternatives

Alternatives — Havaist coach and M11 metro with a pram

Not every family needs a private car. Two public options work under the right conditions.

Havaist coach with older kids

The Havaist coach network is legal for children of any age — coach services are exempt from the child seat rule that applies to cars — and structurally very safe. There is no seat provision on board, so an infant or toddler travels on a parent's lap or in the adjacent seat with the standard adult belt. In practice this works well for children aged around 5 and above who no longer strictly need a seat. Coaches have luggage racks, USB charging and Wi-Fi. See the Havaist Istanbul Airport network guide for lines and stops.

M11 metro with a pram

The M11 metro from IST is lift-equipped at the airport station and at all M11 stops, so a family with a pram can reach the city. The catch is the Yenikapı or Aksaray transfer: to continue onto the M2 or T1 tram most families face escalators or stairs while carrying a folded pram plus suitcases. Manageable with school-age kids who can walk and roll their own bag; awkward with a baby in a carrier plus multiple suitcases. See the public transport guide for detailed accessibility notes.

Rough decision guide by family size

Couple + baby or toddler

Pre-booked sedan with infant carrier or toddler seat. Meter taxi is not a safe fallback — the seat is the entire point.

Family of 4–5 with luggage

Mercedes Vito or VW Caravelle 7-seater with the mix of seat types you need. Enough room for prams and multiple suitcases.

Extended family, 6–8 travellers

8-seater van (Sprinter or Crafter). Grandparents plus parents plus kids in one vehicle, one door-to-door price.

07 · Watch-outs

Common family-transfer mistakes to avoid

Four traps that catch parents specifically when arriving in Istanbul.

Accepting a "family taxi" tout inside the terminal

Anyone approaching you inside IST or SAW arrivals offering a "family taxi" or "hotel car" is unlicensed. Licensed taxis wait at the official rank outside, and pre-booked drivers stand quietly at the arrivals gate with a printed name sign. Never follow a stranger to an unmarked vehicle — especially with children in tow.

Skipping the seat "because the ride is short"

Airport-to-hotel is roughly 45–75 minutes at motorway speeds — the exact conditions in which a child restraint saves lives. "Just this once" is illegal, uninsured and puts the child in a compact car doing 90 km/h with only the parent's arms as restraint. Treat the seat as non-negotiable.

Under-declaring luggage or children

Booking a sedan when the family actually numbers 2 adults + 3 kids + 5 suitcases leads to a stressful curbside moment where nothing fits and a second car has to be scrambled. Be generous with numbers when messaging — over-allocating a vehicle is cheap; running out of space at pick-up is not.

Not sharing the flight number

Without a flight number the driver goes off your original message time — so a two-hour early arrival or a two-hour delay both cause problems. With the flight number, arrival is tracked automatically from the airline feed and the driver adjusts. Always include the flight number (e.g. TK1988) in the booking message.

08 · FAQ

Istanbul airport family transfer — frequently asked

The most-asked questions from parents flying into IST or SAW.

Is a child seat legally required in an Istanbul taxi?

Yes. Turkish traffic law requires an appropriate child safety seat for every child under 150 cm in height or under 12 years old, in all vehicles — including private cars, taxis and pre-booked transfers. Infants must travel in a rear-facing carrier on the rear seat. The rule applies equally to residents and to visiting tourists, and the driver is responsible for compliance.

Do Istanbul airport taxis provide child seats?

Almost never. Yellow taxis at the official IST and SAW ranks rarely carry infant carriers, toddler seats or boosters — they cater mainly to solo business travellers and couples. Pre-booking a family transfer is in practice the only reliable way to guarantee the correct seat is installed when you land.

How do I book a family transfer with car seat?

Send a WhatsApp message 24–48 hours before your flight with the ages and approximate heights or weights of each child, your total luggage count including any pram, your hotel address and the flight number. We match you to a vehicle large enough for the family and luggage, with the correct seat types installed in advance.

Which vehicle for 2 adults, 3 kids, 4 suitcases and a pram?

A Mercedes Vito or VW Caravelle 7-seater is the right choice. It seats 2 adults plus 3 children in dedicated seats, has room in the boot for 4–5 large suitcases and a folded pram, and takes up to three child seats side by side. A standard sedan would be too tight for both the seats and the luggage.

Is Havaist safe for kids without a car seat?

Havaist coaches are legal to use with children of any age — coach services are exempt from the child seat rule that applies to cars. Coaches are structurally safer than cars per passenger kilometre, but they have no child seat provision and no rear-facing option for infants. In practice Havaist is a reasonable choice for older kids from around 5 years upward. For infants or toddlers, a pre-booked car transfer with a proper seat is the calmer option.

What time should I book for a morning flight arrival?

Send the WhatsApp message 24–48 hours before your scheduled landing time. The driver tracks your flight number and adjusts their arrival to match the actual landing, not the scheduled time, so an early or delayed flight is handled automatically. There is no extra fee for waiting when the delay is on the airline's side.

Are the seats installed correctly?

Yes. Our drivers install the seats before leaving the depot and check the belt path, tether and recline angle against the manufacturer's markings. Infant carriers are fitted rear-facing on the rear seat. If a parent wants to double-check the fit at pickup — or reinstall with the seat brought from home — the driver will wait.

What if my flight is delayed?

Flight delays are tracked automatically from your flight number. The driver will be at IST or SAW arrivals when your aircraft actually lands, not at the original scheduled time. There is no delay surcharge for airline-side delays. If a flight is cancelled and rebooked to a different day, message us on WhatsApp with the new details and we reschedule at no extra cost.

Can we pay by card?

Yes. Fixed-price family transfers can be paid in cash (Turkish Lira, Euro or US Dollars) or by Visa/Mastercard through the driver's in-car POS terminal. Card payments are processed at the end of the ride once you have arrived at the hotel.
