You cannot get lost on the way out of IST: the arrivals route is a single one-way flow, and every passenger on your flight walks the same corridor. Knowing the stages tells you exactly when your driver becomes reachable.

Jet bridge → passport control
The walk from a far pier to passport control can take 15–25 minutes — IST is genuinely big, and moving walkways only shave part of it. E-gates handle a growing list of nationalities; everyone else queues for a stamped booth. Drivers know this: nobody expects you in the hall ten minutes after touchdown.

Baggage claim
Belts are shown on the screens straight after passport control. This whole zone is security-restricted — passengers and airport staff only. No driver, greeter or hotel rep can enter, whatever anyone promised you. Trolleys are free.

Which exit for the official taxi rank — and how the queue works
No booking? The official metered rank is the default, it runs 24/7, and it is a two-to-three-minute walk from the customs doors.
Finding the rank
The rank sits directly outside the arrivals level, on the kerb. Exit doors in the 9–13 range have been used for taxis, but door numbers shift with terminal works and seasonal reconfiguration — treat any specific number you read online as provisional and follow the overhead yellow Taxi signs from the arrivals hall instead. They are posted continuously from the customs exit to the kerb and are the one piece of wayfinding that stays correct when the layout changes.
How the queue works
A coordinator in a high-visibility vest marshals the line and directs you to the next car — no bidding, no choosing, no negotiating. The meter starts at zero when you set off. One UKOME-regulated tariff applies 24 hours a day (the separate night tariff was abolished in 2017), and motorway or bridge tolls (~₺50–100) are added on top at the end. What a metered ride costs from IST
Typical all-in ranges including tolls: Taksim ~₺1,200–1,700 (40–45 km) · Sultanahmet ~₺1,400–1,900 (~50 km) · Kadıköy ~₺1,700–2,400 (65–75 km, bridge or tunnel crossing). Card acceptance is improving but not universal — small TL cash keeps the end of the ride friction-free.

Where greeters legally stand — and why it's after customs
A pre-booked pickup at IST follows one fixed choreography, set by airport security rules rather than by any individual company.
The greeter line
Authorised greeters wait in the international arrivals hall, along the barrier facing the customs exit — a row of people holding printed name boards and phone screens. Walk the line slowly once before you assume yours is missing: the hall is wide, several flights empty into it at once, and your name may be a few metres to either side of where you emerged.
Why nobody meets you at the belt
Baggage claim and everything before customs is a restricted zone — drivers physically cannot come to the belt, and anyone who claims otherwise is not a legitimate greeter. The correct mental model: your driver becomes reachable the moment you pass the customs doors, and not one step earlier.
Name board or phone screen
Both are standard. When you book by WhatsApp, confirm the exact name that will appear on the sign — surname only, full name, or a company reference — so you know what you are scanning for. If two passengers share a name on the same arrival bank, the plate check below resolves it.
Verify before you walk
Before leaving the hall with anyone, cross-check the driver's first name and the vehicle plate against what was sent to you by WhatsApp. A legitimate pre-booked driver expects this check and volunteers the details. If they do not match, stay in the hall and call the number you booked with.
Meeting-point landmarks inside the hall (a specific café, a numbered door, an information desk) are useful but impermanent — signage changes with terminal works, so agree the landmark by WhatsApp on the day rather than relying on an old blog post. The yellow Taxi signs and the greeter barrier are the two constants.

How to spot them
Men loitering between the customs doors and the exits, making eye contact and offering "taxi?", "transfer?", "hotel car?" — sometimes with a laminated card or an official-looking lanyard. The official rank never solicits inside the terminal: it is a marshalled queue on the kerb with a coordinator, and pre-booked greeters stand still holding a specific passenger's name, not fishing for anyone's business.
What to do
Nothing dramatic — a brief "no, thanks" without stopping, and keep walking. Unlicensed cars quote inflated flat prices, sometimes several times the metered fare, and give you none of the rank's paper trail. Flight delayed, or you can't find each other
The two situations travellers fear most are the two the system handles best — as long as you use WhatsApp rather than wandering.
Delayed flight
A pre-booked driver tracks your flight number and shifts the pickup automatically — reasonable delays cost nothing extra and require no action from you. For a severe delay, a missed connection or a changed flight number, send one WhatsApp message when you know, so the slot is re-confirmed. And if you land with no booking at all: the rank runs 24/7, so a 3am arrival is never stranded.
The can't-find-each-other playbook
Stay inside the arrivals hall — do not drift to the kerb. Message on WhatsApp: your flight number, that you are through customs, and the number of the exit door nearest to you (or a photo of the closest sign). A door number or a photo beats any verbal description of a hall this size. Then stand still and let the driver come to you — two people walking in circles never converge.
