The European Bosphorus villages
Ortaköy, Kuruçeşme, Arnavutköy and Bebek line the European shore of the Bosphorus in that order, moving north from Beşiktaş towards the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge. Landmarks include the neo-baroque Ortaköy Mosque, the weekend food and craft market of Ortaköy Square, the Ottoman fortress of Rumeli Hisarı above Bebek, Bebek Park on the waterfront, and the leafy campus of Boğaziçi University. Yali — Ottoman-era waterfront wooden mansions — line the shore between Arnavutköy and Bebek.
Not the same as Beşiktaş centre
Beşiktaş proper is the busy central district — Dolmabahçe Palace, Beşiktaş ferry piers, the football stadium, Barbaros Bulvarı traffic. The Bosphorus villages sit ~3–8 km further north along the shore road, quieter and more residential, with hotels and restaurants that trade on the water view. Expect a very high-end market: celebrity-spotted brunches, Michelin listings, luxury shopping in Bebek's centre. Cars are the norm; the shore road (Muallim Naci Cd. / Cevdet Paşa Cd.) is the only through route.

Which option should you pick?
Solo or budget
The M11 + M2 + bus 22 chain is workable if you travel light — total ~₺85 to Bebek or Ortaköy. Otherwise a hybrid of M11 + M2 to Levent, then a metered taxi downhill, saves fifteen to twenty minutes and keeps the cost around ₺170.
Family or with luggage
Fixed-price transfer or metered taxi. Door-to-door means no bus stop hunting near Levent and no shuffling cases through the Ortaköy weekend crowds. Per-person cost drops sharply with two to four travellers.
Late-night arrival
Taxi or fixed-price transfer. M11 metro closes around midnight; IETT bus 22 stops earlier; the Taksim–shore taxi hop at 02:00 is more hassle than a single ride from IST. A pre-booked WhatsApp transfer means someone is waiting when you land.

The IST → Ortaköy / Bebek taxi route
Two motorway approaches from IST feed the Bosphorus shore — a standard route via Barbaros Bulvarı and a scenic alternative dropping down at Rumeli Hisarı. Both stay on the European side; no Bosphorus bridge crossing is needed.
Standard route via Barbaros Bulvarı
O-7 motorway → E-80 → Cendere → Zincirlikuyu → Barbaros Bulvarı → shore road. The default choice for Ortaköy and Kuruçeşme. Off-peak this is 50–60 minutes end to end. Rush hour (07:30–09:30, 17:00–19:30) sees Barbaros Bulvarı and the shore turn heavy, pushing the trip to 90–100 minutes.
Scenic route via FSM Bridge exit
O-7 → FSM Bridge (northern) exit → Rumeli Hisarı → Bebek shore road. The driver leaves the motorway just before the bridge and drops down along the Bosphorus to Rumeli Hisarı and Bebek. Ten to fifteen minutes longer but views of the strait the whole way. Useful for Bebek and Arnavutköy in particular; the shore road bypasses Zincirlikuyu traffic.
Tolls (paid on top of the meter)
Both routes pass through O-7 toll gates. No Bosphorus bridge crossing is required — Ortaköy, Bebek and Kuruçeşme are all on the European side. The driver pays tolls automatically via HGS (High-Speed Toll) on their windshield and you reimburse in cash at the end.

Havaist to Taksim, then transfer to the shore
There is no direct Havaist line to Ortaköy, Bebek or Kuruçeşme. The nearest connection is HVIST-1 to Taksim, then a taxi or IETT bus 22 / 22RE downhill.
Time & fare
~100–120 minutes total including the Taksim change. HVIST-1 fare ~₺220–380; add ₺15 for the bus or ~₺100–150 for the taxi downhill. Comfortable in a coach seat but a long trip end to end.
Where to board
Follow "Havaist" signs from arrivals downstairs to the coach station (lower level). Board at the HVIST-1 platform. No pre-booking needed — pay onboard with İstanbulkart, contactless card or cash.
Why the Bosphorus villages don't have a direct coach
Havaist route planning targets high-volume corridors — the historic peninsula, Taksim, Kadıköy, Bakırköy. The narrow, congested shore road through Ortaköy, Kuruçeşme and Bebek can't handle 46-seat coaches, and demand splits across too many small hotels to justify a dedicated line. In practice most travellers to these villages take a taxi.

M11 metro + M2 + bus 22 — the cheapest chain
Public transport to the Bosphorus villages costs a fraction of a taxi but involves two transfers and a bus stop at Levent that is not obvious with luggage.

Board at IST metro station (lower level, follow "Metro" signs). 10 stations, ~30 minutes, ~₺42. Trains every 10–15 minutes, first ~06:00, last ~00:00. Purchase İstanbulkart from the vending machine before boarding.

M2 metro: Gayrettepe → Levent
Transfer at Gayrettepe (green M2 line, northbound). One stop, ~5 minutes, ~₺27 with same İstanbulkart. Trains every 3–5 minutes, first 06:00, last 00:00. Exit at Levent for the bus stop.

IETT bus 22 or 22RE: Levent → Ortaköy / Bebek
Walk out of Levent metro to the Zincirlikuyu / Levent bus corridor. Board bus 22 or 22RE downhill towards the shore. ~15–25 minutes, ~₺15. Bus 22 stops at Ortaköy and continues through Kuruçeşme, Arnavutköy to Bebek.
Hybrid: metro + short taxi at Levent
The friendlier variant for luggage: M11 → Gayrettepe → M2 → Levent, then hail a taxi outside Levent metro exit and ride ~10 minutes down to Bebek, Ortaköy or Kuruçeşme. Bus stop hunt avoided, luggage stays with you, and the total cost is around ₺170 — roughly a tenth of a full IST taxi. Takes ~80 minutes end to end.
Total cost of the M11 + M2 + bus 22 route: ~₺85 per person with İstanbulkart transfers, versus ~₺1,700 for a direct taxi. But allow 85–95 minutes end to end including the Levent walk and wait times.

Four traps that catch first-time visitors travelling to the Bosphorus villages.
Underestimating shore-road traffic
Muallim Naci Cd. and Cevdet Paşa Cd. — the shore road through Ortaköy, Kuruçeşme, Arnavutköy and Bebek — narrows to a single lane in places. On summer weekends, brunch traffic in Ortaköy and Bebek can add 20–30 minutes to the last kilometre. Off-peak arrivals are dramatically faster.
Confusing Beşiktaş with Ortaköy
Some hotels market themselves as "Beşiktaş" when they are in fact in Ortaköy, Kuruçeşme or even Arnavutköy — three to eight kilometres apart. Confirm the exact address with your driver before departing, otherwise you may be dropped at Beşiktaş ferry piers and left with a taxi hop.
The "fixed price" driver at the rank
Some drivers at the airport rank quote a "fixed price" instead of using the meter. This is illegal — the metered UKOME tariff is mandatory. Politely say "meter please" (taksimetre lütfen) or walk to the next car. A genuine fixed-price offer only comes from a pre-booked transfer, not a rank driver.
Assuming late-night M11 works
The M11 metro from IST closes around midnight and IETT bus 22 stops earlier. If you land at 01:00 with a Bebek reservation, only a taxi or fixed-price transfer will get you there — the metro + bus chain isn't running.
