HVIST-1
IST → Bahçeşehir → Beylikdüzü Migros. Frequent departures, ~45–60 min. From Beylikdüzü, a 10 min local taxi (~₺150) reaches western Ataköy hotels.
Route · IST → Ataköy / Bakırköy / Yeşilköy (European coast)
Landing at Istanbul Airport (IST) with a hotel on the European coast — Ataköy, Bakırköy or Yeşilköy. Distance: ~25–35 km. Travel time: 25 minutes off-peak, 40–60 minutes in rush hour. This is the shortest — and cheapest — mainstream tourist transfer from IST. Four ways to make the trip: metered taxi (~₺700–1,200), fixed-price WhatsApp transfer, Havaist HVIST-1 / HVIST-4 coach (~₺170–250), or M11 metro + Marmaray (~₺69, ~55 min). Compare all four below.
Updated
01 · Where these coastal districts are
A ~10 km ribbon of European-side coastline south of IST, on the Marmara Sea. Popular with business travellers and budget tourists for one reason: proximity to the airport, plus direct Marmaray rail into central Istanbul.
All three sit inside the wider Bakırköy municipality on the European side, along the Marmara Sea. Ataköy is the coastal apartment complex and marina zone — mid-century planned housing built around Ataköy Marina and Galleria Ataköy shopping mall. Bakırköy proper is the traditional town centre (İstiklal Cd., Bakırköy Meydanı) — İstanbul's largest local shopping district for residents, with a Marmaray station. Yeşilköy is the historic Greek/Armenian seafront district next to the former Atatürk Airport, known for fish restaurants, a promenade and turn-of-the-century architecture. Zeytinburnu and Şirinevler sit just east and north as transit hubs.
These are not touristic districts in the Sultanahmet sense — you won't find a Blue Mosque here. But they are where budget travellers, business travellers and airport-early-morning-flight travellers concentrate, for three reasons. First, they're the closest hotel clusters to IST (25–35 km, ~30 min taxi). Second, they sit on the Marmaray line — one-seat rail into Sirkeci (Sultanahmet gateway) in ~15–20 minutes. Third, room rates run 20–40% below comparable Sultanahmet or Taksim hotels of the same class. If you have a 05:30 departure or a 22:00 arrival, staying here often makes more sense than the old city.
02 · Four ways
Compare all four side-by-side. Because the distance is short, taxi is unusually competitive on cost — but Marmaray is genuinely fast and cheap too.
M11 + Marmaray is the sweet spot — cheap, direct rail to Bakırköy, one transfer at Halkalı, no traffic. If you're travelling light and want to save further, İETT H-2 bus is ₺27 and drops you in central Bakırköy.
Because the distance is short, a metered taxi at ₺700–1,200 shared 2–4 ways is often cheaper per head than four Havaist tickets — and it's door-to-door. Best value option for groups on this route.
Taxi or fixed-price transfer. M11 and Marmaray close around midnight; Havaist thins out overnight. A short ~30 min taxi ride is the reliable choice, and the fare stays low because the route is short.
03 · Taxi route
A single motorway option connects IST (Arnavutköy, north-west) to the Marmara coast (south). No bridges, no ferries, no crossings — just a short south-bound run down the O-7 to the coastal D-100.
O-7 motorway south → E-5/D-100 west → Ataköy / Bakırköy / Yeşilköy exit → local streets. Off-peak this is 25 minutes for Ataköy (~30 km) and 30 minutes for Yeşilköy (~35 km). Because it stays entirely on the European side, no Bosphorus bridge toll applies — the total motorway toll is a short O-7 segment only.
The D-100 (E-5) between Bahçeşehir and Bakırköy is one of Istanbul's most congested corridors on weekday mornings (07:30–10:00) and evenings (17:00–20:00). Expect 40–60 minutes in those windows. Same fare either way — the meter charges by km, not by delay — but if you're heading to an evening event, budget the extra time.
This is the cheapest IST tourist route on tolls. Only the short O-7 segment applies; no Bosphorus bridge, no long-distance stretch. Driver pays via HGS on the windshield, you reimburse in cash at the end.
Verify current toll rates at hgs.gov.tr. Some drivers pre-pay tolls; others reimburse as separate cash — either is legal, just confirm the total on the receipt.
04 · Havaist
No single Havaist line drops directly in central Ataköy or Bakırköy, but two nearby lines get you close — a short local taxi covers the last km.
IST → Bahçeşehir → Beylikdüzü Migros. Frequent departures, ~45–60 min. From Beylikdüzü, a 10 min local taxi (~₺150) reaches western Ataköy hotels.
IST → Yenibosna → onward to inner districts. From Yenibosna, either walk to the M1A metro or take a short taxi (~₺100) into Bakırköy centre.
Fare ~₺170–250 depending on line and time of day, paid onboard by İstanbulkart, contactless bank card or in cash. Board at the Havaist stand on the airport arrivals lower level. No pre-booking.
Havaist is best if you're solo, travelling light, and staying at a hotel very close to the Beylikdüzü or Yenibosna stops. For most Ataköy Marina, Bakırköy Meydanı or Yeşilköy hotels, a metered taxi (~₺700–1,200 shared) or M11 + Marmaray (~₺69 direct to Bakırköy station) is quicker and simpler than a coach-plus-transfer combination.

05 · Metro + Marmaray or bus
For Bakırköy in particular, the M11 metro plus Marmaray commuter rail combo is genuinely competitive with a taxi — cheaper and immune to traffic.
Board at IST metro station (lower level, follow "Metro" signs). Take the M11 towards Halkalı — this is the western terminus. ~40 minutes, ~₺42. Trains every 10–15 minutes, first ~06:00, last ~00:00. Purchase İstanbulkart from the vending machine before boarding.
At Halkalı, cross the platform to the Marmaray commuter rail (Gebze direction, eastbound). One stop to Bakırköy station, ~3 minutes, ~₺27 with same İstanbulkart transfer discount. Trains every 5–10 minutes.
From Bakırköy Marmaray station, most Bakırköy hotels are a 5–15 minute walk. For Ataköy Marina, take Marmaray one more stop east (Ataköy station) or a short ~₺80 taxi. For Yeşilköy, take Marmaray one stop west (Yeşilköy station). For Zeytinburnu, two stops east.
The İETT municipal bus H-2 runs direct from Istanbul Airport (IST) to the Bakırköy area for just ~₺27. Takes ~40 minutes in light traffic. No luggage racks and it's a local city bus, but if you're travelling with a single carry-on and want the cheapest possible option, H-2 beats every other route. Departs from the ground-transport level at IST; check current stand at the departure board.
Total cost of the M11 + Marmaray route to Bakırköy: ~₺69 per person with İstanbulkart transfers, versus ~₺900 for a taxi. Allow ~55 minutes end-to-end including transfers at Halkalı and the short walk from Bakırköy Marmaray station to most local hotels.
06 · Hotels
Ataköy Marina and Sheraton in the west, Bakırköy town centre in the middle, Yeşilköy on the historic Marmara edge. Below: the most common IST drop-offs we handle.
Sahil Yolu, Ataköy Marina complex. Direct sea view, part of the marina zone. Standard IST drop-off — every driver knows "Ataköy Marina, Sheraton".
Sahil Yolu, next to Galleria Ataköy shopping mall. Popular for the mall access and marina walkway. ~30 min from IST.
Şirinevler, on the D-100. Long-standing airport-region business hotel. Direct O-7 → D-100 exit, ~25 min from IST.
Osmaniye Mah., Bakırköy. Walking distance to Bakırköy Meydanı and the Marmaray station — good for Sultanahmet day trips.
Osmaniye Mah., near the E-5. Standard business option with airport-friendly location. ~25 min from IST off-peak.
Near İncirli Cd., central Bakırköy. Compact modern rooms, popular with returning business travellers.
Sahil Yolu, Florya (western Yeşilköy). Seafront setting, popular for weekend stays and pre-flight nights. ~30 min from IST.
Yeşilköy, next to the former Atatürk Airport perimeter. Purpose-built for airport transit; still closer to IST than to central Istanbul.
Şirinevler, near Yenibosna metro. Budget-friendly, popular with early-morning departures. Short taxi hop from IST.
Send the Google Maps pin of your hotel via WhatsApp before the trip. Ataköy, Bakırköy and Yeşilköy are all well-signposted districts — driver will drop you at the exact door.
07 · Watch-outs
Four traps that catch first-time visitors on this specific route.
Never take a ride from anyone approaching you inside IST arrivals. All licensed taxis wait outside at the official rank — follow the "Taxi" signs. Because the route to Ataköy is short and the fare small, unlicensed drivers particularly target this leg with inflated flat prices — always use the rank.
Some drivers at the airport rank quote a "fixed price" of ₺1,500–2,000 for Ataköy, hoping tourists don't know the meter would run ₺700–1,000. This is illegal — the metered UKOME tariff is mandatory. Politely say "meter please" (taksimetre lütfen) or walk to the next car.
Some older maps and hotels still say "Atatürk Airport" — that airport is closed to commercial flights and is now an event ground next to Yeşilköy. Your flight lands at Istanbul Airport (IST) far to the north-west. Confirm the driver understands "IST" or "İstanbul Havalimanı", not "Atatürk".
M11 metro and Marmaray both close around midnight. If you land at 01:00, only taxi, fixed-price transfer or the reduced-frequency overnight Havaist will move you. Because this is IST's cheapest route, a late-night taxi still stays around ₺800–1,100 — usually the sensible choice.
08 · FAQ
The most-asked questions for travellers making this exact trip.
A licensed metered taxi from Istanbul Airport (IST) to Ataköy typically costs ₺700–1,200 in 2026, including motorway tolls (~₺30–50). The distance is ~25–30 km and the journey takes ~25 minutes off-peak, 40–60 minutes in rush hour. There is no night surcharge — the same single UKOME tariff applies 24/7. This is the cheapest tourist-area airport transfer from IST.
Bakırköy sits ~30–35 km south of Istanbul Airport (IST) along the O-7 motorway and D-100 coastal road. Driving time is 25–30 minutes off-peak and 45–60 minutes during rush hour. Bakırköy is on the European side, on the Marmara Sea coast — the closest major hotel district to IST that also has direct Marmaray rail into central Istanbul.
Yes — for a mainstream tourist district, IST to Ataköy / Bakırköy / Yeşilköy is the cheapest transfer from Istanbul Airport. Taxi fare of ₺700–1,200 is roughly half the cost of IST to Sultanahmet (~₺1,400–1,900) or IST to Taksim (~₺1,500–2,000), because the distance is shorter and the toll route uses only a brief O-7 segment (~₺30–50 tolls, no Bosphorus bridge).
Not directly, but easily with one change. Take the M11 metro from IST to Halkalı (~40 min, ~₺42), then transfer to the Marmaray commuter rail one stop east to Bakırköy station (~3 min, ~₺27). Total ~50–60 minutes end to end for ~₺69. From Bakırköy Marmaray station, most Bakırköy hotels are a 5–15 minute walk or a short taxi. Ataköy and Yeşilköy hotels are one Marmaray stop further east or west respectively.
The Sheraton Istanbul Ataköy is on Sahil Yolu (the D-100 coastal road) inside the Ataköy Marina complex. The taxi route is O-7 motorway south from IST → E-5/D-100 west → Ataköy exit → Sahil Yolu → Sheraton main entrance. Distance ~30 km, time ~30 minutes off-peak, fare ₺800–1,100 plus ~₺30–50 tolls. Ask the driver for "Ataköy Marina, Sheraton" — every driver knows it.
Yes. Yeşilköy is the historic seafront district that surrounds the former Atatürk Airport (İGA IST replaced it in 2019 — Atatürk is now closed to commercial flights and used as a fair/event ground). Yeşilköy has its own Marmaray station, a lively seafront promenade, small fish restaurants and a mix of Greek/Armenian heritage architecture. From the new Istanbul Airport (IST) it is a ~35 km, ~30 minute taxi trip via O-7 and the coastal D-100.
IST to Zeytinburnu is ~35–40 km and typically costs ₺900–1,300 by metered taxi, including motorway tolls (~₺30–50). Time is 30–35 minutes off-peak, 50–70 minutes in rush hour. Zeytinburnu sits one Marmaray stop east of Bakırköy and is a busy interchange (T1 tram + Marmaray) — useful base for travellers who want cheap airport access plus easy rail into Sultanahmet.
After midnight the M11 metro and Marmaray stop running, so the only realistic options are a metered taxi, a fixed-price WhatsApp transfer, or the overnight Havaist coach (reduced frequency, ~60–90 minute gaps between departures). Because IST → Bakırköy is short (~30 km) the metered fare stays around ₺700–1,100 even overnight, so a taxi is usually the sensible choice for a late arrival.
Yes — this is one of the strongest reasons to pick a Bakırköy hotel. From Bakırköy Marmaray station, direct trains reach Sirkeci (10-minute walk from Sultanahmet) in ~15–20 minutes for ~₺27. That means airport-adjacent accommodation with fast, one-seat rail access to the old city — often at a lower nightly rate than a Sultanahmet hotel of the same standard.
