HVIST-5
IST → Bahçeşehir → Bakırköy → Yenikapı → Aksaray. Best for Aksaray, Laleli and Yenikapı hotels — many are a 5-minute walk from the stops.
Route · IST → Fatih (Historic peninsula)
Landing at Istanbul Airport (IST) with a hotel somewhere in Fatih — the whole historic peninsula covering Aksaray, Laleli, Beyazıt, Süleymaniye, Fener and Balat as well as Sultanahmet. Distance: ~45–55 km. Travel time: 45–90 minutes depending on sub-district and traffic. Four ways to make the trip: metered taxi (~₺1,300–1,800), fixed-price WhatsApp transfer, Havaist HVIST-5 or HVIST-12 direct coach (~₺220–380), or M11 metro + M2 direct to Aksaray (~₺69, ~55 min). Compare all four below.

01 · What Fatih covers
Many first-time visitors confuse Fatih with Sultanahmet. Understanding the difference saves confusion at the airport and money on your transfer.
Fatih is the administrative district covering the entire historic peninsula on the European side — the old walled city bordered by the Golden Horn to the north, the Bosphorus to the east and the Sea of Marmara to the south. It contains around 450 hotels spread across neighbourhoods that each have their own character: Sultanahmet (touristic core), Aksaray (transport hub and budget hotels), Laleli (wholesale textile district, popular with Russian and Central Asian shoppers), Beyazıt (Grand Bazaar and Istanbul University), Süleymaniye (mosque quarter above the Bazaar), and Fener / Balat (Byzantine and Ottoman multi-ethnic quarters along the Golden Horn — very photogenic).
A hotel marketed as "Istanbul Old City" or "in Fatih" is often not literally in Sultanahmet — it could be 3 km away in Aksaray or Laleli, or 5 km away in Balat. All of these still count as Fatih. The taxi fare band is similar for the whole peninsula (₺1,300–1,800), but the best public-transport option differs: Aksaray, Laleli and Beyazıt hotels are best served by the M2 metro from Yenikapı, while Sultanahmet needs the T1 tram, and Fener / Balat is essentially taxi-only. Check your booking address before you land — this page is dedicated to the non-Sultanahmet parts of Fatih. If your hotel is on Alemdar Cd. or near Hagia Sophia, use our dedicated IST to Sultanahmet guide instead.
02 · Four ways
Compare all four side-by-side. Best option depends on your sub-district in Fatih, group size, luggage and time of arrival.
The M11 + M2 metro to Aksaray is the sleeper hit — ~₺69, ~55 min, no tram transfer. Genuinely competitive with a taxi for solo travellers with a suitcase you can wheel. Otherwise fixed-price transfer for door-to-door comfort.
Taxi or fixed-price transfer — the streets are steep, cobbled and narrow. Metro leaves you at Vezneciler with a 10-minute uphill walk. Havaist HVIST-12 to Sultanahmet then short taxi works too.
Taxi or fixed-price transfer only. No direct coach, no direct metro. Public transport requires bus or T5 tram transfer and takes 90+ minutes with luggage. Just book door-to-door.
03 · Taxi route
Similar to the Sultanahmet route but exits earlier onto the peninsula. Same motorways, same fare band, slightly shorter distance.
O-7 motorway → coastal D-100 (Sahil Yolu) → Aksaray or Yenikapı exit → into Fatih. This is the preferred routing for the Aksaray, Laleli and Yenikapı hotel cluster because the drop-off is at the western end of the peninsula, nearer the motorway exit. Off-peak this is 45–55 minutes. Rush hour (07:30–09:30, 17:00–19:30) it slows on D-100 near Küçükçekmece.
O-7 → FSM Bridge → D-100 → down into Fatih. Similar to the Sultanahmet routing but exits further along the peninsula depending on your hotel. Preferred for Fener, Balat and Süleymaniye because approach from the north (Golden Horn side) is more direct. Same fare either way — the meter charges by km, not by route chosen.
Both routes pass through toll gates. The driver pays tolls automatically via HGS (High-Speed Toll) on their windshield, and you reimburse in cash at the end of the trip.
Verify current toll rates at hgs.gov.tr. Some drivers pre-pay tolls; others reimburse as separate cash — either is legal, just confirm the total on the receipt.
04 · Havaist
The İBB airport coach network runs two lines that between them cover almost the entire Fatih peninsula. Slower than a taxi but with a fixed ticket price and 24/7 operation.
IST → Bahçeşehir → Bakırköy → Yenikapı → Aksaray. Best for Aksaray, Laleli and Yenikapı hotels — many are a 5-minute walk from the stops.
IST → Beylikdüzü → Bakırköy → Yenikapı → Sultanahmet. Drops on Alemdar Cd., a short walk or 5-minute taxi from Süleymaniye, Cağaloğlu and Sirkeci.
~70–100 minutes depending on traffic. Fare ~₺220–380, paid onboard by İstanbulkart, contactless bank card or in cash to the driver. No pre-booking needed.
Rule of thumb: if your hotel is west of Beyazıt Square (Aksaray, Laleli, Yenikapı, Vatan Cd.), take HVIST-5. If it is east of Beyazıt (Sultanahmet, Sirkeci, Cağaloğlu, Cankurtaran, Süleymaniye), take HVIST-12. Fener and Balat are not directly served — nearest stop is Sultanahmet or Aksaray, then a short taxi.

05 · Metro
Unlike the Sultanahmet route which needs a tram transfer, the M2 metro drops you directly at Aksaray station — right in the heart of the western Fatih hotel cluster.
Board at IST metro station (lower level, follow "Metro" signs). 10 stations, ~30 minutes, ~₺42. Trains every 10–15 minutes, first ~06:00, last ~00:00. Purchase İstanbulkart from the vending machine before boarding.
Transfer at Gayrettepe (green M2 line, southbound). Stay on until Aksaray station (~20 minutes, ~₺27 with same İstanbulkart). Trains every 3–5 minutes, first 06:00, last 00:00.
Aksaray station sits at the junction of Aksaray Cd. and Vatan Cd. Most Aksaray and Laleli hotels are within 500 m. For Beyazıt or Süleymaniye, either walk 15 minutes or take one T1 tram stop from Yusufpaşa.
An alternative is M11 to Halkalı (~40 min, ~₺42), then Marmaray commuter rail to Yenikapı (~20 min, ~₺27). Yenikapı is a two-minute walk from Laleli and a 10-minute walk to Aksaray. Fewer transfers if you land after midnight when the M2 southbound may already be closing.
Total cost of the M11 + M2 route: ~₺69 per person with İstanbulkart transfers, versus ~₺1,500 for a taxi. Allow ~55 minutes end-to-end including the walk between platforms. For Aksaray, Laleli and Beyazıt hotels this is genuinely competitive with a taxi — the tram transfer that makes public transport awkward for Sultanahmet is not needed here.
06 · Hotels
The Fatih peninsula covers ~450 hotels across several distinct clusters. Below: the most common non-Sultanahmet IST → Fatih drop-off points, grouped by area.
Millet Cd., central Fatih. Large chain hotel a short walk from Aksaray and Vatan Cd. Easy motorway access — a straightforward drop-off.
Gençtürk Cd., Laleli. Modern rooms in the wholesale textile district. Short walk to Beyazıt and the Grand Bazaar.
Tiyatro Cd., Laleli. Long-standing traveller favourite, close to the M2 metro at Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı.
Cerrahpaşa Cd., Aksaray. Popular family choice with easy transfer access — close to the M2 metro at Aksaray station.
Kadırga Limanı Cd., between Aksaray and Kumkapı. Quieter side of the peninsula with sea views from upper floors.
Küçük Langa Cd., Aksaray. Well placed for the M2 metro and Havaist HVIST-5 drop-off — a five-minute walk to either.
Süleymaniye Cd., above the Grand Bazaar. Ottoman-style rooms with mosque views. Steep cobbled approach — driver drops at the nearest wide corner.
Ayvansaray Cd., along the Golden Horn. Best reached by direct taxi — no metro or Havaist stop nearby.
Cankurtaran boutique with sister property in Fener. Sea views and Byzantine-Ottoman atmosphere. Door drop-off possible outside peak rush.
Send the Google Maps pin of your hotel via WhatsApp before the trip. Fatih's narrow lanes and one-way streets are covered — driver will get you to the closest safe drop-off. Sultanahmet-specific hotels are handled on our dedicated page.
07 · Watch-outs
Four traps that catch first-time visitors on this specific route.
A hotel labelled "Old City" or "Fatih" is often 2–5 km from the Blue Mosque, in Aksaray, Laleli or Balat. Check the exact address before you land — the walk from Sultanahmet to a Laleli hotel with a suitcase is genuinely unpleasant, and a driver going to the wrong sub-district costs time.
Some drivers at the airport rank quote a "fixed price" instead of using the meter. This is illegal — the metered UKOME tariff is mandatory. Politely say "meter please" (taksimetre lütfen) or walk to the next car in the rank.
HVIST-5 stops at Yenikapı and Aksaray; HVIST-12 at Sultanahmet. Neither serves Fener, Balat or Süleymaniye directly. Plan a short taxi (₺100–200) from the drop-off, or start with a full door-to-door transfer if you have heavy luggage.
The M11 metro from IST closes around midnight. After that, only taxi, fixed-price transfer or overnight Havaist reaches Fatih. For a 02:00 arrival with a Fener or Balat hotel, a pre-booked door-to-door transfer is essentially the only realistic option.
08 · FAQ
The most-asked questions for travellers making this exact trip.
Fatih is the administrative district (ilçe) that covers the whole historic peninsula — the old walled city on the European side. Sultanahmet is one small neighbourhood inside Fatih, containing the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and Topkapı Palace. Other Fatih neighbourhoods include Aksaray (transport hub), Laleli (wholesale textile district), Beyazıt (Grand Bazaar), Süleymaniye, Fener and Balat (Byzantine and Ottoman quarters). Many hotels labelled "Istanbul Old City" are in broader Fatih, not literally Sultanahmet.
A licensed metered taxi from Istanbul Airport (IST) to a Fatih address typically costs ₺1,300–1,800 in 2026, including motorway tolls (~₺50–100). The distance is ~45–55 km and the journey takes ~45–90 minutes depending on traffic and which part of Fatih. There is no night surcharge — the same single UKOME tariff applies 24/7.
If your booking address is on Alemdar Cd., Divan Yolu, Tevkifhane Sok., Küçük Ayasofya Cd., Cankurtaran or the streets immediately around the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, it is in Sultanahmet — see our dedicated Sultanahmet guide. If it is on Ordu Cd. (Laleli), Aksaray Cd., Vatan Cd., near Beyazıt Square, in Süleymaniye, Fener or Balat, it is in Fatih outside Sultanahmet. Both are within the same taxi fare band.
A metered taxi from IST to an Aksaray hotel typically costs ₺1,300–1,700 including tolls. Aksaray sits closer to the airport end of the peninsula than Sultanahmet, so it is usually a few kilometres shorter than a Sultanahmet drop-off. Travel time is 45–75 minutes depending on traffic. Aksaray is also directly served by M2 metro, making public transport genuinely competitive here.
By taxi: O-7 motorway → coastal D-100 → exit at Yenikapı or Aksaray → Ordu Cd. into Laleli (~50 min, ₺1,300–1,700). By public transport: M11 to Gayrettepe, then M2 south to Aksaray or Vezneciler — both a short walk to Laleli hotels. By Havaist: HVIST-5 stops at Aksaray, HVIST-12 at Sultanahmet — either is a 5–10 minute taxi to Laleli.
Fener and Balat sit along the Golden Horn on the north side of Fatih, off the main Havaist and metro network. A metered taxi or fixed-price transfer is by far the best option (₺1,400–1,800, ~55 min). Public transport requires M11 + M2 + T5 tram or a bus transfer and can take 90+ minutes with luggage. If you land late, a door-to-door transfer is the only sensible choice.
Yes — indirectly. M11 from IST to Gayrettepe (~30 min, ~₺42), then M2 southbound to Aksaray (~20 min, ~₺27). Total ~₺69 and ~55 minutes end-to-end. Aksaray station puts you at the heart of the Aksaray, Laleli and Yenikapı hotel cluster. This is genuinely competitive with a taxi for solo travellers with light luggage — no tram transfer needed.
The M11 metro closes around midnight, so after that only taxi, fixed-price WhatsApp transfer or overnight Havaist reaches Fatih. Havaist HVIST-5 and HVIST-12 both run 24/7 with reduced overnight frequency (60–90 minute gaps). If you land at 02:00 with luggage and a Fener, Balat or Süleymaniye hotel, a pre-booked door-to-door transfer is almost always the smart call.
Süleymaniye sits on the hill above the Grand Bazaar, between Beyazıt and the Golden Horn. Taxi is easiest — ~50 min, ₺1,400–1,800, drop-off on Süleymaniye Cd. or the nearest wide corner. Public transport: M11 to Gayrettepe, M2 to Vezneciler, then a 10-minute uphill walk. Streets are steep and cobbled, so with any luggage, the taxi wins.
