- Rank operates around the clock — taxis meet every arrival, including 2–5 am low-cost landings

Why SAW fares look higher than the map suggests
Sabiha Gökçen sits on the Asian side of Istanbul, in Pendik, roughly 40–50 km from the city's Asian centres and 50–65 km from the European-side tourist districts. Any trip to Taksim, Sultanahmet or Beşiktaş crosses the Bosphorus by bridge or tunnel, which adds distance, time and ₺50–100 in tolls passed on to you on top of the meter. The one scam worth knowing before you land. It takes ten seconds to defeat once you recognise it.
It works like this: somewhere between baggage claim and the kerb, a man — sometimes in a lanyard, sometimes just confident — offers you a "taxi" at a flat price quoted in euros. "Taksim? Fixed price, no meter, no stress." The pitch sounds convenient, especially after a red-eye flight. Converted back to lira, these quotes almost always land well above what the meter would show for the same trip — and the meter is not optional to begin with.
Why euros?
A round euro figure feels small and familiar to tourists, and it hides the comparison with the metered lira fare. If you don't know the ₺1,400–1,900 band for Taksim, "€60, fixed" sounds plausible. That's the whole trick.
The meter is the law
Under İBB UKOME rules, a licensed taxi must run the taksimetre from the start of every trip, charging in Turkish lira. Flat-fare offers at the kerb are illegal for metered taxis — there is no official "fixed tariff to Taksim".
The refusal script
No argument needed. Smile, say "No thank you — meter, please", and keep walking to the official rank outside arrivals. If a driver at the rank itself refuses the meter, step out and take the next car — there is always a next car.
Inside the terminal = not official
Licensed drivers wait with their cars at the rank. Anyone soliciting passengers inside the arrivals hall or at the doors is working outside the system, whatever their badge says. Politely ignore and walk on.
One distinction matters: a transfer you arranged in advance, with a quote agreed in writing before you fly, is a normal private booking — you chose it with full price visibility. The trap is the ambush quote at the kerb, priced in euros, from someone you've never spoken to. The first is a booking; the second is a markup hunting for jet lag.
04 · Arriving at night
Landing at SAW at 2 am: what actually works
Sabiha Gökçen is Istanbul's low-cost airport, and low-cost schedules love arrivals between midnight and 5 am. Here's the honest picture.
Good news first: no night surcharge, ever
Istanbul runs a single taxi tariff 24/7 — the night tariff (gece tarifesi) was abolished in 2017. Your 2 am ride to Taksim costs the same ₺1,400–1,900 band as a 2 pm ride, often at the lower end because the motorway is empty and the trip drops toward 45–50 minutes. Any driver announcing a "night rate" is making it up — refuse and take the next taxi.
- The taxi rank runs all night. Taxis meet every scheduled arrival, including the 3 am ones. The queue at that hour is usually a handful of people.
- HAVABUS thins out overnight. The shuttle to Taksim and Kadıköy runs a reduced overnight pattern with real gaps between departures — if your flight is delayed past a departure, the next one can be a long wait on a pavement bench. Check the current timetable at havabus.com before counting on it.
- The M4 metro closes at night. The M4 line serves SAW during the day, but like the rest of the Istanbul metro it shuts down around midnight and reopens in the early morning (verify hours at metro.istanbul). A 2 am landing misses it entirely.
- So the realistic 2 am options are two: the metered taxi rank, or a pre-booked driver waiting at arrivals with your name. Everything else has gone home.
If you're landing after midnight with a family or a lot of luggage, decide before you fly: either budget for the metered taxi band to your district, or arrange a pickup in advance. If your budget matters more than door-to-door convenience, SAW has two solid public options that cost a fraction of the metered fare.

The maths is blunt: HAVABUS to Taksim costs roughly a tenth of the metered taxi fare. The trade-offs are equally blunt — fixed departure times, a fixed drop-off (Taksim square area or Kadıköy waterfront, not your hotel door), and the overnight gaps covered in section 04. For a solo traveller with a cabin bag arriving mid-afternoon, it's the obvious choice. For three people with four suitcases, the taxi split three ways closes most of the price gap and wins on effort.
The M4 + Marmaray combination is the cheapest of all and immune to road traffic: take the M4 from the station under the terminal, change at Ayrılık Çeşmesi to the Marmaray rail line, and you're in Üsküdar minutes later — or under the Bosphorus to Sirkeci and the old city on the European side.
