01 · Where is Sultanahmet & why the SAW crossing matters

What Sultanahmet is — and why SAW makes the trip longer

The old-city core is on the European side. Sabiha Gökçen is on the Asian side. Every route from SAW to Sultanahmet crosses the Bosphorus, adding time, tolls and complexity that IST passengers do not face.

The old city core

Sultanahmet is a neighbourhood inside Fatih district, on the European side of Istanbul, at the tip of the historic peninsula. All Byzantine and Ottoman landmarks — Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya), Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii), Topkapı Palace, Basilica Cistern, Hippodrome, Grand Bazaar — sit within 10–15 minutes' walk of Sultanahmet Square. It is a compact hotel zone of roughly 1 km² covering Cankurtaran, Ahırkapı, Alemdar, Cağaloğlu and Sirkeci.

SAW is on the wrong side of the city

Sabiha Gökçen sits in Pendik, deep on the Asian side of Istanbul. To reach Sultanahmet on the European side you must cross the Bosphorus by tunnel, bridge or Marmaray rail — the strait divides two continents right through the middle of the city. Expect the trip to be ~10 km further and 15–25 minutes longer than the equivalent from Istanbul Airport (IST), plus tolls of ₺150–200. If you have flexibility in your flight choice, IST is closer to Sultanahmet.

Which option should you pick?

Solo or budget

M4 metro + Marmaray. One transfer, cheapest option, and the under-Bosphorus rail is quicker than HAVABUS. If you have very light luggage, the 10-minute walk uphill from Sirkeci to Sultanahmet is manageable.

Family or with luggage

Fixed-price transfer or metered taxi. Door-to-door means no dragging bags between metro and tram, no navigating Marmaray platforms with a stroller. Per person cost drops with 2–4 travellers and one Eurasia Tunnel crossing.

Late-night arrival

Taxi or fixed-price transfer. M4 metro and Marmaray close around midnight; HAVABUS runs overnight but has 60–90 min gaps and no direct Sultanahmet line. Pre-booked WhatsApp transfer means someone is waiting when you land.

03 · Taxi route

The SAW → Sultanahmet taxi route

Two crossings connect the airport (Pendik, Asian side) to Sultanahmet (Fatih peninsula, European side). Both involve the Bosphorus and both carry tolls — Eurasia Tunnel is faster.

Eurasia Tunnel (faster, day and night)

E-5 (Anadolu) → Eurasia Tunnel (Avrasya Tüneli) → D-100 → Sultanahmet. The tunnel runs under the Bosphorus between Harem (Asian side) and Kazlıçeşme (European side), emerging within 10 minutes of Sultanahmet. Off-peak (late night, early morning) this is 60–65 minutes airport to hotel; rush hour 80–95 minutes. This is the preferred route for taxi and transfer drivers to Sultanahmet.

15 July Martyrs Bridge (cheaper toll, longer route)

E-5 or O-4 → 15 July Martyrs Bridge (Boğaziçi Köprüsü) → Beşiktaş → D-100 → Sultanahmet. Crosses the Bosphorus above ground with panoramic views. Cheaper toll (~₺30–40 vs ~₺150 for the tunnel) but adds distance because you land on the wrong side of the Golden Horn and have to loop back south. Typical when the Eurasia Tunnel has a closure or heavy backlog. Same UKOME meter rate — the fare charges by km, not by chosen route.

Tolls (paid on top of the meter)

Every SAW → Sultanahmet route pays a Bosphorus-crossing toll on top of the metered fare. The driver pays via HGS (High-Speed Toll) on the windshield, and you reimburse in cash at the end of the trip.

  • Eurasia Tunnel (Avrasya Tüneli): ~₺150 for a car — preferred crossing
  • 15 July Martyrs Bridge (Boğaziçi Köprüsü): ~₺30–40
  • O-4 motorway segments: ~₺10–30 depending on entry point
  • Total tolls added to fare: typically ₺150–200 via Eurasia Tunnel, ~₺50–80 via bridge

Verify current toll rates at hgs.gov.tr. Because the Eurasia Tunnel toll is the biggest single cost element, always confirm which crossing the driver plans to use before pulling away — most will take the tunnel to Sultanahmet by default.

04 · HAVABUS + connect

HAVABUS to Taksim, then metro and tram to Sultanahmet

There is no direct HAVABUS line to Sultanahmet. You take HAVABUS to Taksim (or Kadıköy) and connect onward. Slower and slightly awkward with luggage — cheaper than a taxi but no faster than the metro option.

Route A — via Taksim

HAVABUS Taksim

SAW → Bostancı → Kadıköy → cross the Bosphorus via the 15 July Martyrs Bridge → Taksim. From Taksim take M2 metro southbound to Yenikapı, then T1 tram east to Sultanahmet stop.

Route B — via Kadıköy + Marmaray

HAVABUS Kadıköy

SAW → Bostancı → Kadıköy pier area (~60 min). Walk to Ayrılıkçeşmesi Marmaray station, cross under the Bosphorus to Sirkeci (~15 min), walk 10 min to Sultanahmet. Fewer transfers, slightly quicker than via Taksim.

Time & fare

2026

HAVABUS Taksim: ~75–90 minutes, ~₺180. Onward M2 + T1: ~30 min, ~₺30. Total ~2 hours, ~₺210. Pay onboard with İstanbulkart, contactless card or cash. No pre-booking.

Where to board HAVABUS

Follow "HAVABUS" or "Airport Shuttle" signs from SAW arrivals to the coach bay directly outside the terminal. Modern coaches with luggage racks in the belly of the vehicle. Two large suitcases per person included.

05 · Metro + Marmaray

M4 metro + Marmaray under the Bosphorus — the cheapest route

Public transport from SAW to Sultanahmet costs a fraction of a taxi, and the Marmaray rail line runs directly under the Bosphorus from Asian side to European side.

  1. 1
    M4 metro: SAW → Ayrılıkçeşmesi

Board at the SAW metro station (follow "Metro" signs from arrivals to the lower level). ~45–50 minutes, ~₺50. Trains every 8–12 minutes, first ~06:00, last ~00:00. Purchase İstanbulkart from the vending machine before boarding. Get off at Ayrılıkçeşmesi (one stop before Kadıköy) — direct transfer to Marmaray on the same platform level.

  2. 2
    Marmaray: Ayrılıkçeşmesi → Sirkeci

Transfer to Marmaray commuter rail, westbound (Halkalı direction). Runs under the Bosphorus in a tube tunnel from Asia to Europe. ~15 minutes, ~₺27 with the same İstanbulkart. Trains every 5–10 minutes, roughly 06:00 to 00:00.

  3. 3
Sirkeci → Sultanahmet on foot (or one tram stop)

Exit Sirkeci station and walk ~10 minutes uphill along Ankara Cd. and Alemdar Cd. to Sultanahmet Square. Alternatively, catch the T1 tram at Sirkeci one stop east to Sultanahmet — you will be facing the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. Tram fare ~₺15 with İstanbulkart.

Ferry alternative (scenic)

Instead of Marmaray, take the M4 all the way to Kadıköy (one stop beyond Ayrılıkçeşmesi), walk to Kadıköy iskelesi and board a Şehir Hatları ferry to Karaköy or Eminönü (~25 minutes across the Bosphorus with open-air deck). From Eminönü, walk 15 minutes uphill or take one T1 tram stop to Sultanahmet. Longer overall but the crossing is memorable — best in daylight and without heavy luggage.

Total cost of the M4 + Marmaray route: ~₺80 per person with İstanbulkart transfers, versus ~₺1,700–2,200 for a taxi with tolls. But allow ~90 minutes end-to-end including the walking, platform transfers and wait times.

07 · Watch-outs

Common SAW → Sultanahmet mistakes to avoid

Four traps that catch first-time visitors on this specific cross-Bosphorus route.

Accepting rides inside the terminal

Never take a ride from anyone approaching you inside SAW arrivals. All licensed taxis wait outside at the official rank — follow the "Taxi" signs. Anyone inviting you to their "hotel car" or offering a flat rate on the sidewalk is unlicensed and will overcharge, especially for a long cross-Bosphorus trip.

Not confirming the Eurasia Tunnel

Some drivers take the 15 July Martyrs Bridge (cheaper toll for them, longer route in km) hoping the higher meter offsets the toll saving. Before you pull away, ask for the Eurasia Tunnel (Avrasya Tüneli) — it is faster, more direct and standard for Sultanahmet drop-offs. If the driver refuses, take the next car.

Assuming HAVABUS goes to Sultanahmet

HAVABUS does not have a Sultanahmet line. If you board expecting a direct drop-off you will end up at Taksim (2 km north of the Golden Horn, 5+ km from Sultanahmet). Plan the M2 + T1 onward leg — or take M4 + Marmaray instead, which is faster and cheaper.

Underestimating the total travel time

SAW is genuinely far from Sultanahmet — plan for 90–120 minutes door to door even by taxi in daytime traffic. Do not book a tour or restaurant for 2 hours after landing. If your Sultanahmet hotel booking has a strict check-in cut-off, message ahead: the Bosphorus adds unpredictability.

08 · FAQ

SAW to Sultanahmet — frequently asked

The most-asked questions for travellers making this exact Asia-to-Europe trip.

How much is a taxi from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) to Sultanahmet in 2026?

A licensed metered taxi from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) to Sultanahmet typically costs ₺1,500–2,000 in 2026, plus ₺150–200 in tolls for the Eurasia Tunnel or the 15 July Martyrs (Bosphorus) Bridge. The distance is ~55–65 km and the journey takes 60 minutes very late at night and 75–100 minutes in daytime traffic. There is no night surcharge — the same single UKOME tariff applies 24/7.

Why is SAW to Sultanahmet more expensive than IST to Sultanahmet?

Sabiha Gökçen is on the Asian side of Istanbul (Pendik) and Sultanahmet is on the European side (Fatih). The taxi must cross the Bosphorus, which means paying the Eurasia Tunnel toll (~₺150) or the 15 July Martyrs Bridge toll (~₺30–40). Distance is also ~10 km longer than the IST route. Combined tolls of ₺150–200 push the total fare above what you would pay from Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side.

Is there a direct bus from SAW to Sultanahmet?

No. HAVABUS, the airport coach from Sabiha Gökçen, does not run direct to Sultanahmet. It goes to Taksim (~75–90 min, ~₺180) or Kadıköy (~60 min). From Taksim you take the M2 metro to Yenikapı then the T1 tram east to Sultanahmet — add ~30 minutes. From Kadıköy the Marmaray commuter rail runs under the Bosphorus to Sirkeci, then a 10-minute walk to Sultanahmet.

Which crossing does the SAW to Sultanahmet taxi use?

Two options. The Eurasia Tunnel (Avrasya Tüneli) runs under the Bosphorus between Kazlıçeşme and Harem — this is the faster and more direct route to Sultanahmet, preferred day and night. Toll ~₺150 for a car. Alternative: 15 July Martyrs Bridge (Boğaziçi Köprüsü) across the strait to Beşiktaş, then D-100 west to Sultanahmet — a bit longer, cheaper toll (~₺30–40), but heavier traffic at peak hours.

Can I use the M4 metro from SAW to Sultanahmet?

Not directly. The M4 metro runs from SAW to Kadıköy on the Asian side (~50 min, ~₺50). To reach Sultanahmet you transfer at Ayrılıkçeşmesi to the Marmaray commuter rail, which crosses under the Bosphorus to Sirkeci (~15 min, ~₺27). From Sirkeci it is a 10-minute walk uphill to Sultanahmet, or one stop east on the T1 tram. Total journey ~90 minutes end-to-end, ~₺80 with İstanbulkart.

What is the best option for a late-night SAW arrival?

Taxi or fixed-price transfer. The M4 metro from SAW closes around midnight, and the Marmaray closes shortly after. HAVABUS runs overnight but with 60–90 minute gaps between departures and does not go direct to Sultanahmet. For arrivals between 00:30 and 05:00, a pre-booked WhatsApp transfer means a driver is waiting at arrivals with your name on a sign — no queueing at the taxi rank at 3 am.

How long does it take from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) to Sultanahmet?

By taxi via the Eurasia Tunnel: 60 minutes very late at night, 75–100 minutes in daytime or rush hour. By HAVABUS to Taksim with M2 + T1 tram onward: 110–130 minutes end-to-end. By M4 to Kadıköy plus Marmaray to Sirkeci and short walk: ~90 minutes. Because SAW is on the opposite side of the city from Sultanahmet, every option takes longer than the equivalent trip from Istanbul Airport (IST).

Should I choose SAW or IST for a Sultanahmet-based trip?

If you have a choice, Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side is closer to Sultanahmet (~50 km, no Bosphorus crossing, ~₺1,400–1,900). Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side is further (~55–65 km) and requires a Bosphorus crossing with tolls, adding time and cost. That said, SAW often has cheaper flights from Europe and the Middle East — the ~₺200–400 extra transfer cost may still work out favourably overall. Just factor it into your flight comparison.

Can I pay by credit card for SAW to Sultanahmet taxi?

Most licensed Istanbul taxis now accept Visa and Mastercard through an in-car POS terminal, but not all. Always carry Turkish Lira (TL) cash as backup — around ₺2,500 covers the fare plus tolls comfortably. Tolls (Eurasia Tunnel or Bosphorus Bridge) are paid via the driver's HGS transponder and reimbursed in cash. Booking via WhatsApp fixed-price transfer removes payment friction: card is charged automatically and no toll reimbursement is needed.
